I have the FTE on a .308 and it's a sweet brake, bet that Thruster tames the WM.

The installation of the Thruster comp looks SUPER clean. I wonder how much of that was the installation or the coating. Looks great either way!

What stock is that on there? Any plans for upgrading the stock? I'm leaning towards a McMillan A-5 for my 700.

Pappabear has the AAC two chamber brake on his 5R 300 WM. Works great....

I think he's got a pink Springco in there however! :jester:

It's so clean you can't tell where the Thruster ends and barrel begins. Here's a pic before the coating when on:

IIRC it's an HS Precision stock with full internal aluminum bedding block that comes OEM on the gun. No plans to upgrade the stock as of now, as long as it shoots. I have an AI 2.0 on my .308... It's hard to spend 1K on a stock. I do plan to paint this stock eventually.

Maybe markm will let me try out his Salmon-colored SpringCo ;)

You still might skim bed it. We shot Pappabear's 5R SS with the green stock for 500 rounds or so. When the smith pulled the action out, you could see where the hold that the action screw go in were egging out.... even with a full, heavy torque value on them.

I do plan to do that, especially after reading those AAR's you guys did. I'm just not in a rush to send it back out.
I gotsta make sure it shoots true first :p

That's freaking amazing! It almost likes like they machined the comp into the end of the barrel. I'm still looking around for a comp for my 700. Interested in how that Thruster works for you.

You guys still going on about the "fruity colored" springs? Haha. Maybe we have to get markm a pink rear bag for his bag fettish. :haha:

Nice looking 300, I have the same rifle. Didn't do as much upgrading though:

Timney-Bedding-Knob-AAC Brake. We shot it first time last week. But plan to heat that mother up on Saturday. Last week we sighted it in and warmed it a little.

These Brakes today are amazing. I never dreamed I would shoot a 300WM and it feel like a 243.

Thanks man. Yeah, I'm a bit jealous of your AAC brakes. I don't think they were available three years ago. At the time, cans were not legal in MI yet either. They are now

Shot the gun today. Recoil was similar to a AR, very light.

Groups were as good as expected for factory ammo. Being about 32 degrees my finger was freezing but I still managed to get MOA groups or less. A couple were around 1/2" and the hundo. It was just too damn cold to care. I forgot the camera... :(

Great gun though. I think I may get into reloading now...

Shit with the cost of ammo how can you not? Save you're brass

I'm lucky enough to score ammo at dealer cost.

Well thats good whats the price gap? I got into hand loading before the prices went crazy on the loaded stuff. I only started doing it for the increase in accuracy at range but it morphed from there into doing everything. The price diffrence is still quite substantial and the quality is much higher when you hand load. If you need any tips let me know

Pappabear
02-04-12, 23:16
Yes, hand load. We shot my 5R today and it shot 3 different loads Markm cooked up. I shot one 5 shot group that was .25 inches. All three were half inch groups. That gun will drive tacks! I'm pretty excited about the gun. I'm sure you would have done the same with hand loads and 65 degrees outside. Just had an amazing day at the range.

Your Rem700 5R 300WM is Boss. Especially yours all jacked up:D

That's amazing; I gotta start investing in reloading equipment.

What do you guys have your Timney's set at? We checked mine with a Lyman electronic trigger measure thingy and it averaged right at 3.5lbs. I may drop it down to 3 even. It breaks so nice for a $125 trigger.

Can anyone recommend a good smith to do the skim bedding? After it gets bedded, I'm going to hide the silly green swirl with spray paint.

Kevin Cram at Montoure County Rifles has built 3 guns for me. He can do it.

If he is to bussy you can try Kirby Allen of Allen precsion shooting he built me two rifles as well, and if Kirby is to bussy Shawn Carlock of Defensive Edge might have time he did the inlet on my last stock. Then there is Joel Russo just google his name and wood stocks. I will personaly vouch for any of there work! Its just a skim bed so I would think a week or two tops. Also give tought to bedding your scope base. I can walk you through that.

This rifle shot this group at 875M with my handload. Its 4 rounds you can see where I walked it up before I shot the group. I did not own a good rangefinder at the time and had to do my own spoting and use mils. This rifle was built by Kirby

This is what a 300M zero should look like the dot is 1" You can get this result to from handloads. Hitting the tagret is good put picking what eye you want the bullet to go through is better.

I have heard 5K is about maxed out for a 300WM barrel. Can anyone confirm?

What do you guys get for barrel life in .300 WM?

Ned its all very subjective. Let's say u shoot load x for 3k and you're groups goes in the toilet. Allot of Guys would say my barrel is shot out. I say no u need to switch to a more forgiving bullets and start chasing the throat.

Anyone who has a shot-out taken-off .300WM barrel, I need to study this-- if you can provide a round count and some ammo info, I'll saw it in half lengthwise and give you back half of it. PM me.

We haven't killed one yet, but we will.

We've heard 1500-3000 rounds. (i posted this very question on accurateshooter a month or so back)

Depends on the rate of fire and the accuracy requirement.

Thats some good shooting. The 300 fights the wind a little better than the 308. ICANHIT..needs to send me some of those nice custom guns to the boys in AZ , so we can play BIG TIME.

Question on triggers, I set mine at 2.5 lbs. When you start shooting nice triggers, everything else sucks. I just cleaned my 270win. Dry fired the trigger, it has a trigger job, but I still hated it.

Good luck with your gun.

After gaining access to a 2200yd range about 4 hours from me this week, I have decided I need something bigger than my .308 mws.

After reading a little on these rifle I have decided the rem .300WM 5r is exactly where I want to start. Thanks for the quick write up.

Pappabear

The 300 WM is the obvious choice. I would love a 338 Lapua. But $3 to 4 per bang is a little much. One day I might get one, but I will have master the 300 first, and that will be YEARS.

Congrats on your 5R. Mine have impressed me.
