New member here. I've been lurking around reading for quite awhile but just now got to joining. I would like to thank a lot of you for a lot of good info and ideas that I have read and now use in my everyday life. I was on ARFCOM and there is just too much drama over there I like it a lot better here. Anyways over there they have a couple threads with prep pictures and gun pics and what not and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to start one here as I would love to see what other like minded people have. Obviously without showing "too much". What do you guys think? Are you game?

Loved Mac when I was a kid!
He actually used an AK47 in the very beginning of the pilot episode to shoot at some terrorists. Pretty sure it was the only time he ever used a gun in the 7 seasons the show aired.

Where do you get your brushes and lather? My Gramps used a set up like yours. I bought one from a local drug store but the brush and lather are not very good.

I'm guessing it was the Van Der Hagen set. It's super cheap and if you mess with it a while you can make it work. It was my first foray in to wet shaving. It's basically the Oly Arms of wet shaving. Cheap enough to get you hooked but you'll quickly realize that spending a little bit more can get you far better performance.

These are the two best deals in shave brushes that I know of:
Omega 10098 (http://www.amazon.com/Omega-Shaving-10098-Professional-Bristle/dp/B002V40IS2/ref=sr_1_4?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1329530833&sr=1-4) and Frank Shaving Best Badger (http://shop.starshaving.com/Best-Badger-Hair-Shave-Brush-0012.htm).

I have both and use them regularly. The badger hair one is my usual travel brush as badger hair dries more easily than boar hair. I use the Omega regularly and it's my second favorite brush.
There are other manufacturers of quality brushes out there but until you double the price on the Omega brush you won't find boar hair of that quality anywhere else. The 1049 is hands down my favorite brush from Omega because it comes already broken in and is almost as soft as my favorite brush that cost a couple bucks more. If you want badger hair the Frank Shaving (only available from the link or ebay) are the best quality until you spend at least $75-100. I've tried a good number of the options out there. Keep in mind that most brushes have a bit of a stank on them but a few gentle shampooings or just using it for a week or two will get it out.

This is my favorite brush. (http://www.straightrazordesigns.com/shaving-brushes/heinrich-l-thater/heinrich-l-thater-4292-6-i-28mm-two-band-finest-silver-tip-bulb) It's so smooth. It's like a cross between brushing your face with a baby's butt and a cloud.

For my soaps & creams, that's a whole big bag of who knows what...
The Col. Conk brand soaps work well. Rite Aid sells Real Shave Co. cream that's 5 bucks a tube and works well. Bath & Body Works sells C.O. Bigelow cream that works quite well and has a nice menthol burn to it. It's 10 bucks for a big tube that will last 4-6+ months. It only takes a lima bean sized spot to work once you get the hang of it.
Truefitt & Hill and Taylow of old Bond Street are my personal favorite brands but they're a bit pricier.

If you want videos on lathering properly and wet shaving properly, mantic59 (http://www.youtube.com/user/mantic59?feature=chclk), on youtube has one of the most solid channels in terms of info.
This is probably the best beginner's guide you can read on the subject (http://straightrazorplace.com/srpwiki/index.php/Beginner%27s_guide_to_straight_razor_shaving).

For fora on wet shaving I'm a fan of:
Badger and Blade (http://badgerandblade.com/)-Devoted to all things wet shaving but emphasis on double edge razors
Straight Razor Place (http://straightrazorplace.com/content/) -Probably the oldest forum and dedicated to the Straight Razor but has a DE section (I like the folks on Straight Razor Place, quite generous and some very, very knowledgeable folks in the art of restoring old steel and honing the sharpest damn edges you've ever seen under 300x magnification)
Razor and Stone (http://razorandstone.com/) - Newer & smaller forum formed by members of the other two sites. Some super knowledgeable folks over there as well but it's not as active.

If you get into it be careful. I started at Christmas time last year with one Dovo Shavette and the cheap drug store set. I figured that with my set up plus a real straight razor and a strop I'd save money w/o give gillette 20 bucks a month on blades. I now have 8 brushes, 10 straight razors (one pre-civil war, one from between 1870-1910, and the rest are from after that) and two double edge razors. 10 different shave cream, 4 soaps, 5 after shave balms, 4 after shave creams, 3 strops, a set of synthetic water stones a couple big diamond stones a few natural stones and I'm trying to convince my wife to let me get a set of the Spyderco stones. I could probably go 3-4 years w/o buying anything else and still keep my face baby butt smooth. It's an addiction. It's probably good that I've been bitten by the AR bug now...

Razors? They will run out eventually, this is why I force myself to look at hairy women at least twice a week on the net if you know what I mean. This is my way of "prepping" for the fact that all the women will be hairy when the zombies attack.

Just get a Merkur 34C and a whole lotta DE Razors (http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/razorblades.html) like feather SS and personna. They last a lot longer than machX blades.

I'm usually in too big of a hurry for the badger brush treatment so my normal shave oil is Oliveology (http://www.oliveology.com/buy-oliveology.asp).

I cannot discuss any preps that I may or may not have.

What I can do is offer a great Beef Wellington recipe I found:

Ingredients

2 1/2 pounds beef tenderloin
2 tablespoons butter, softened
2 tablespoons butter
1 onion, chopped
1/2 cup sliced fresh mushrooms
2 ounces liver pate
2 tablespoons butter, softened
salt and pepper to taste
1 (17.5 ounce) package frozen puff pastry, thawed
1 egg yolk, beaten
1 (10.5 ounce) can beef broth
2 tablespoons red wine

Directions

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Place beef in a small baking dish, and spread with 2 tablespoons softened butter. Bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until browned. Remove from pan, and allow to cool completely. Reserve pan juices.
Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet over medium heat. Saute onion and mushrooms in butter for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and let cool.
Mix together pate and 2 tablespoons softened butter, and season with salt and pepper. Spread pate over beef. Top with onion and mushroom mixture.
Roll out the puff pastry dough, and place beef in the center. Fold up, and seal all the edges, making sure the seams are not too thick. Place beef in a 9x13 inch baking dish, cut a few slits in the top of the dough, and brush with egg yolk.
Bake at 450 degrees F (230 degrees C) for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) for 10 to 15 more minutes, or until pastry is a rich, golden brown. Set aside, and keep warm.
Place all reserved juices in a small saucepan over high heat. Stir in beef stock and red wine; boil for 10 to 15 minutes, or until slightly reduced. Strain, and serve with beef.

It's the damnest thing. Last weekend my brother-in-law, who is also a member here, and I were in a small canoe on the lake by the dam and a rouge jetski wave came up and capsized our small craft. It's not soo bad for us, but we LOST all of our evil black rifles and evil semi-auto pistols. And with us being bad republicans, as soon as our weapons sank we became saved by the democratic party. GO JACK ASSES!! oops I mean yea donkeys.See I told you all Obama will save us . See the light.

With the rush to buy I sold off the last few I owned so now all I do is chat about what I had . The profit is worth it.

Since Obama became president I sold all my guns because with Obama as president I will be saved.

When they started issuing Obama Phones I figured they start issuing Obama Rifles soon afterward...sadly, I was wrong.

First, ^this is spot on!!

Ok, I'm at a loss here. Being the exceptional, liberal, outstanding democrat that I am what is this thing called "guns"? All I have is the highly recommended by that world renown authority VP Joe Biden, a double barrel 12 gauge. :help:

1.) Guns are evil. Like really, really evil. They can even jump out of a locked safe by themselves and go on a killing spree, crash the economy, and raise unemployment. Guns are responsible for the Watergate scandal, global warming, and the failed rollout of obamacare. I even heard if a bullet gets close enough to you, it will kill you from the sonic boom. I don't know why anyone would take the risk of owning one.

2.) Big Red is disgusting.

Hey, didn't mean to start a Big Red hatefest...the joke about the Big Red was for PFC Porky, Internet Commando, and his posse!

For the record, I'm not a Red drinker...waaaayyyy too sweet for me...it's like carbonated, over sugared Kool Aid. But it is a local fav here. Dude who said he drinks it with barbacoa, yep...seen that a time or two, usually barbacoa breakfast Taco's and Red. Breakfast of champions....LOL! But to each their own...I avoid pretty much all sodas personally.

I lost all my Big Red in a tragic boating accident, true story . . .

Javadrinker

I sold all my guns, except the double barrel shotgun of course, and I still felt so bad I donated all the money I got from the sale of my guns to Michael Bloomberg to help with his spreading of the truth on guns and the second amendment. Then I went shark fishing about 12 miles offshore and had to take my Joe Biden recommended and approved double barrel out to keep me safe from the pirates and maybe the sharks. I caught a big shark and just as I was going to shoot him/her a big wave came along and I dropped my beloved, and oh so necessary double barrel into the deep water. Now my soul is clean and I have no more guns. If you believe that then I have some prime real estate to sell you... and I still don't drink Big Red.:bad:
