Hi I'm new to the forum, I'm new to ar's but have been shooting bolt guns and shotguns for a while. I'm looking for a decent Ar-15, and I'm on a budget. I'm only looking to spend $1,000 on a rifle, but at max $1,200. I'm looking for an all purpose gun, for hunting, home defense, and maybe some competition at my local shooting club. I've been looking at some guns like the Colt Hbar rifle, or one of the bcm a4/a5's. Which one of these would you chose, and is there any other type of guns out there that you would recommend that are like these, and also where would you suggest that I would buy it.

Since a Colt fits your budget you can't go wrong with that, and you can add to it after you become familiar with it.

Is it just me or is this question asked literally every day?

Without even using the search button I found three threads:

https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=98936

By the second post in each one of these threads the recommendation is a Colt 6920.

I can only imagine what could be found with the search button.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm looking for a longer ar, with an 18-20in barrel, like any of the A2-A5's

Roger. That does make a difference. I saw home defense and went to 16" rifle. While its possible, 18-20" probably isn't the best choice for home defense.

Anyway, Bravo Company USA has a standard 20" government upper for about $400.

Add a qualilty lower of your choice, quality BCG, rear sight, some MOE handguards, and you will be below your budget with probably a little left for ammo and mags.

I guess it comes down to defining what you really want to do with your rifle. It is hard to have something that does everything well. Figure out what your primary purpose will be and go from there.

Hope this helps.

BTW welcome to the forum.

If you set a budget and you are painfully close to it, then you need to save more money. In addition to the rifle and the basics (sling and cleaning kit) you still need to factor in magazines, ammunition, etc...
