I'm also bringing mine for a day or two at the end. She's an anti...SHOT Show will result in her conversion from the dark side, or an immediate end to our relationship. I'm taking bets if anyone is interested. Her successful conversion is the long shot, currently paying 200:1.

If you want to convert her take her to a very bad ghetto area and walk around with her. Also let her know you forgot your carry piece at home;) Make an excuse for being there that you found out about a terrific restauraunt and lost your keys when you get there.

I'll wait for the drama from shot to spill over into the gun websites. I don't like crowds... I don't like people. I don't like anything. :p

Whats SHOT show?

The SHOT Show is an annual contest in which participants compete to see who can come home with the most (and most valuable) free stuff. If it has ever served any other purpose, I am unaware of it.

It's a weird thing. If you're a gun manufacturor it's as though you MUST have a new gimmick to release at SHOT or you are poop.

I can remember goofballs on TOS speculating on what NEW gun glock would release at SHOT.

God forbid they just stick to their core competency of building good pistols.

Because the reality of the gun industry and the perception people at M4carbine.net have of it are far, far apart.

This is easily demonstrated: Everyone here who owns and loves their S&W Sigma, please raise your hand.

Anyone? Anyone?

Yet Smith sells tens of thousands of them per year because, while they do not appeal to the kind of person who is so interested in guns that he'll spend his free time talking about them online, they are inexpensive and tend to go **BANG** when the trigger is yanked. This is the only criteria for well over half the pistols sold in this country.

Why do you think Glock now has their fancy-finish gun? Because even a brand as ubiquitous as Glock needs to introduce new products on a rolling basis or they begin to lose marketshare and revenue.

Why do you think the .40 S&W exists? If you think it's because of a demand originating among LE you're nuts. The industry created .40 S&W and pushed it, because it meant a whole new iteration of "upgrades" for agencies. If, for the sake of argument, we want to say that a G17 will essentially last forever, what is Glock supposed to do when they've got half the departments in the country using G17s? It's much easier to sell a gun to an existing customer than a new customer. So ta-da, it's time for a new caliber or new whizbang feature ...

Can this approach get you into trouble? Certainly ... just look at S&W now. They've extended themselves so far so fast with so many new products that they're left to flail around in a desperate attempt to figure out what their core competency is in the first place.

But at least for SHOT, companies with nothing new get less booth traffic and generate fewer orders. Because, realize it or, that's the real purpose of the show for companies like Beretta and Glock and SIG. They're not there to display, they're there to sell. Gun shops and distributors sit down, learn about the new year's sales program, and place their orders. SHOT is where a lot of money is made.

But it's still all about scamming free stuff.

Supposedly there was a 75-minute wait for a cab out of the convention center last night. There's nowhere in this town you can't walk to in 75 minutes!

I don't know the strip is pretty long. But I do think hopping on the tram or bus would have been a better option.

Not me, bro. I scored a few flashlights, some other accessories, and the obligatory hats, challenge coins, etc.

Oh, and a new pistol.

And 25,000 rounds of ammo.

I win!

Which planet have you been on?

Huh? You are saying you can walk end to end on the strip in 75 min?

ToddG

Huh? You are saying you can walk end to end on the strip in 75 min?

According to Wikipedia, it's 4mi long (reference (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Las_Vegas_Strip)). I can definitely walk 4mi in 75 minutes. And to be fair, the convention center isn't at one end of the Strip.

I certainly understand that a lot of people would rather wait in a line than walk, I just can't seem to adopt the mentality myself.

yasnevo
02-06-08, 13:26
So... you have never actually walked it then... just going off what the internet tells you will very well lead you astray.

I can tell you that walking from...Ohhh...say Mandalay Bay to the Stratosphere will take you much more than 75 minutes...:D

markm
02-06-08, 13:35
Yes. It's somewhat of an obstacle course.

ToddG
02-06-08, 14:08
Sounds like a challenge to me, then. Something to try when the Show returns in 2010.

(I remember when I was a kid and 2010 was just a sequel to a book that took place far, far in the future ...)
