What ever happened to the USMC M45 pistol?

It seems dating from september 2009 the are having an open competition to select it, any news? Is the program dropped, delayed or changed?

As far as I have heard, this is still ongoing.

It seems so, but why the looong time frame?

For a long time now (since 2005, or earlier) the USMC is/was trying to get an off the shelf 1911 pistol to replace the custom built ones, but so far no one is getting the nod, testing/desition time frames are long, or simply nobody makes it the way they want it??

I remember reading one of the requirements: drop in replacement parts... that's a tought one for 1911s (at least for optimum performance). But even leaving that spec behind, why there is no pistol chosen?

the fact it is a very small demand- for USMC special ops applications only- means especially with troops no longer deploying to Iraq the priority for this is probably low. Sooner or later the supply will become critically low and they they will bust a move. For now there are probably enough original 1911's that they could continue to do rebuilds on them for a long time. that is certainly not the best solution considering those framse are 70 or so years old- but considering DOD budget cuts and all it may be what is done for a while
