Although I was in the Army, I have always been a lifelong student of military history and do have a strong interest in naval history as well. I wanted to mention what I think is the shameful naming of modern US Navy warships. I think it is a reflection of the politicization of the military under Obama and sheer political narcissism.
Here are a few recent examples:
USS John Murtha
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_John_P._Murtha_(LPD-26)SS John Murtha
Although Congressman Murtha was in the Marines, there are countless Marines with more distinguished records who were not corrupt politicians who spent the later part of their careers slandering the service of members of the military.
USNS Cesar Chavez
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USNS_Cesar_Chavez
Chavez only spent 2 years in the Navy as a deckhand and painter and was a labor leader. I don’t think his military qualifications are deserving of a ship named after him.
USS Gabrielle Giffords
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Gabrielle_Giffords_(LCS-10)
Giffords spent no time in the military and only real distinction as congress women was being shot in the head by a madman.
