Thoughts on the stuff? I have been putting together a med kit to have around for work. I work around heavy equipment on a day to day basis and would like to know what you guys think of it? We are atleast 25 minutes from the nearest small town clinic.

Anyone used it or have experance with it or simulare stuff? My thought was that it would be handy to have around.

This is the stuff that we have around:

I also have some Quick Clot Trama Paks in the vechiles:

Any input on Celox and its pros or cons would be appreciated.

QuikClot is the default for most, with some good reason. The others are serviceable and have their own individual merits. Like any other widget, make sure you understand what it is, how it works, and when it should and shouldn't be used.

A previous thread on QC/Celox:

There are several other discussions of the hemostatic agents and dressings under search.

Found this as well:

CELOX is legit. The powder is harder to deal with than a pad based product. If you can get the powder in the wound, pack it in along with some direct pressure it's good to go.

Cut the dogs nail too close, wouln't stop bleeding with a good couple minutes of direct pressure with 4x4s. Celox stopped it in 20 seconds.

I have used celox on a casualty in Afghanistan who had a GSW to his groin and it worked great, the bleeding stopped in a matter of seconds, it wasn't particularly pleasant stuffing the entire bandage into his flesh but it did the job, after stuffing I applied pressure for about 2 minutes just to be sure. I rate it really highly, I think it's a great bit of kit.

Anyone have experience with this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Celox-A-20-0040-/170877048114?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27c910d532

I bought some (as I thought it might be good if I needed to fill a hole or hard to reach spot). I also have their gauze as well.

Went through BTOMS and TCCC this past June. Instructors advised to totally avoid powder type hemostatic agents. We were told that TCCC only recommends Quick Clot Combat Gauze at this time.

Kind of a thread revival, but the above poster is correct. Combat Gauze is the only thing being currently issued to US troops.

Turns out that with the poweder, they were seeing too many emboli being associated w/ it. Kind of poor form to save the kid from bleeding out, only to have them die of a PE 2 weeks down the road.

I never quite understood the composition of the CELOX and how a gelatin like bandage functions to stop severe bleeding.

Dont beat me up too bad im not a doc.

The bandage is dry in composition and very similar to a regular gauze bandage it just has a flaky powder type substance on its surface which is the coagulant that stops the bleeding. When it is in contact with blood it becomes a little bit limper as the bandage absorbs the fluid but it doesn't become gelatinous. As I previously said its a very good product and is comparable to the quikclok combat gauze the only thing that lets it down is the size of the packet, that is where quikclok z folded gauze has the edge.

Is the coagulant/hemostatic agent in the celox the stuff that is made from shellfish? Anybody know what I'm talking about?

Yes, shellfish chitin.
