I just picked up a 1990 cherokee. 4.0 with a 5 speed manual. Got one of the rather rare 2 door variants. No rust! a few little drips and i think the AC needs work, but overall pretty solid.
Really loving that torquey 4.0, my last 4x4 was an 89 toyota pickup with a 22RE. painfully slow!

Here is my old 1998 XJ. It was a tank!

I love the Cherokee. If I had a son and a garage I think we'd be "building" one instead of the traditional hot rod.

I've been passively keeping an eye out for a clean '01 (last year they were made) or '00 as a project car. If I can find the right combination of packages I'll pay to have it as a daily driver, and if I can't I'll buy it to use as a range vehicle and go a different direction.

What I REALLY want though is one of these

My college wingman's fiancee had that exact same model (1990 - it was BRAND new then!) in college, only her's was an auto. I had a fraternity brother, with your exact same model - AND the 5-spd - and he blew the motor in it (no mean feat - a semi-properly maintained 4.0 ought outlast ME!!!). They were/are solid trucks.

I liked the design so well, that when they FINALLY made one with a V-8, I bought it! :p

I got a buddy here in da' 'Burgh who's lifted one 6" and modded it for serious off-roading. I may yet trade him an old project Dodge Ramcharger for it. :D It'd be nice to have both.

No offense, but the Commander is not the same thing as a Cherokee. Not even close. Every time I see one of those I think of the Canyonero (http://www.google.com/imgres?hl=en&safe=off&sa=X&rlz=1C1GGGE_enUS433US433&biw=1366&bih=681&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=dzhnfjOX9O_WPM:&imgrefurl=http://simpsons.wikia.com/wiki/Canyonero&docid=QZ0_AIG5OZjHvM&imgurl=http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070816184835/simpsons/images/thumb/f/ff/Canyonero.jpg/250px-Canyonero.jpg&w=250&h=185&ei=SJNHT_DVCKHV0QHn0aWoDg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=208&vpy=211&dur=31&hovh=148&hovw=200&tx=93&ty=63&sig=116946184282135777725&page=1&tbnh=139&tbnw=176&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0). lol

I've had a 99 Cherokee for 8 years now, added a 3.5" Rubicon Express lift and 31" BFG tires. I've only got 120K on it, looking forward to having it for a long while. It's a great range Jeep, and is perfect for snow. The blizzards of 09-10 were no challenge it.

I love the thing. But sadly at $4 a gallon and it getting 17 MPG on a good day, my VW gets the bulk of the driving.

My Wife and I have owned 5 Jeeps. Her flame red 1996 Cherokee was a favorite.

Here is the latest...2011 Overland with my 2005 Limited in the back. The 2011 is the nicest vehicle ever to roll off the Jeep assembly line.

My next one may be the new Wrangler 4 door.

This was last spring, before I cut the grass;)

I bought a '99 Cherokee (XJ) 4.0 4x4 Sport new in '99.

It was my daily driver for 10 years until we traded it in for a used '05 Cherokee Laredo 4x4.

I put nearly 200,000 miles on the '99 and the only repairs I can think of were A/C (which it seemed to eat for a while, but SC summers are hot and humid) and an alternator (which I changed in the driveway).

It got crap gas mileage and I felt was underpowered. I broke the drivers seat more then once. (my 6'4", 245lb frame was pretty wedged in there most of the time). But I never got it stuck.

If they built a new version with a true frame and a more powerful V6 or V8 I'd buy one.

Had a 94 that I drove until the doors literally fell off. Messed around for a few years with a Suburban and a Commander before getting my 01 Cherokee. Love it. Few weeks back my daughters boyfriend rolled his on it's side on some ice. We rolled it back and he drove it away.- George

My 02 feels underpowerd as well but it goes through anything. I also think the seat is going to brake it feels like it moves. In 6'2" 225

the seats are cheesy as hell..

Kinda surprised you guys think it's underpowered... granted my last car was an old mercedes diesel... :o
my jeep is 5 speed too, so that probably helps the pep. The automatic ones i drove seemed to be pretty quick though... all stock tire sizes...

I had a 93 XJ.... essentially my first car. 4.0 with the AW4 Auto.

That thing was a beast. I've done more things with that thing when it was stock than most have with dedicated off-road rigs.

Eventually I started beefing it up. When all was said and done it had Rough Country 6.5" Supension Lift, slip-yoke eliminator with custom drive shaft, 33x15.50" Super Swamper TSL/SX's, Safari Snorkel, Positrak Rear, Eaton E-locker up front, 4.56 Gears, custom bumpers front and rear, flowmaster exhaust, and a throttle body spacer. I replaced the engine once and had the t-case rebuilt, but other than that it was a tank.

It was known throughout the town (C-burg PA) as Sarge.

in the 3rd photo you can see a small Hippo on the dash... that's where my Jeep got the name Sarge... Hippos are unstoppable once they get going... the most deadly animal in Africa.

I believe I rewelded my drivers seat two or three times in all.

Glad I'm not the only one who has had to re weld his seat frame.

I love my '99 Cherokee Limited. Once I can replace it as a daily driver, it, or another Cherokee, will become my project/rebuild car. Swap engine for a diesel, 4x4, a lift, snorkel, etc.

Yay Jeeps. :D

I own an '04 Wrangler Rubicon, but I love the old Cherokees. My friend has a Cherokee 2door 5 spd with about 3" inches of lift and 33's (I think). Beautiful truck, no rust, and spotless even though he does off-road it every so often. Also have a few other friends with Wranglers/Cherokees/Grand Cherokees.

The seat tracks on the Cherokees are terrible. I had to weld my buddy's once. His broke at three different welds. If I remember right I welded some gussets in when I put it back together. Its been good ever since. The metal they use is not strong at all, so its better to use as little heat as possible
