View Full Version : Handguns: In Action!
We have an ar's in action, why not a pistols in action? Pistols are much more difficult to master, so not only can we check out cool guns, but we can also compare/critique each other, and share some cool action pics and videos. Ill start by showing off my poor handgun skills.
7yds, 2 targets, 2 rounds in each. All shots (from this run) landed in the black (9" circle I think). It was my first time practicing target transitions, which at a recent idpa match, I found I am extremely slow at.
CZ75compact .40SW, very weak tula ammo. At the end, I was gonna do another run and decided to do a modified vtac 1-5 drill. 1-4 jumping between 2 targets.

Edit: Almost all my training is geared towards conceled carry. Im covering my gun how I carry between each string of shots.
I'll play...

Sorry, I just stole those off the RB1 Facebook page.
I swear I'm going to bring a camera next time. I don't do Facebook, so I haven't seen those. Looks like some screen grabs from Kyles video, or some of his photos.

Yes, I know, left index finger hooked on the front of the guard. Old habit...

Who was teaching the house clearing class?
The class was through a group called Strategic Tactical. They are a local Utah training group. I've taken a couple classes from them where we've done pistol and rifle house clearing. It's no Vickers class, but they do a pretty good job. They do a lot of training at a Utah facility that has a full shoot house which is nice. If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Ha ha ya only 10 of each. It was enough to get the heart rate up a little.
For most of the filming, I used a GoPro Hero2 HD camera on a head band mount. If you look in this video, you can see it on my head and get a feel for how it was set up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1OR-9NVtSo
And by the way, the GoPro cameras are awesome! They shoot great quality HD video, and they have a ton of different mounting options and are completely waterproof. For only $250, they are well worth it.

Awesome, thanks for the response.
Also, the pushups, just giving you a hard time :D With a ton of gear on it's probably more like twice that, plus you did sit-ups. I see what they are doing though, trying to get your heart rate up trying to duplicate a stressful situation, aka, a real gunfight.
Props, that was fun to watch.

Ya it's good when training to try and induce stress when you can. Obviously it's probably nothing like being in a real life or death situation, but it's much better than just static shooting.
Props, that was fun to watch.
Thanks. The class was 3 days and it was way fun!

At the start of the class the guy on the end closest to the camera in this pic made a comment to the effect he was the only guy there shooting a "real" gun aka "not plastic". Well, after the 3rd or 4th time we had to put the class on hold because his Kimber took a dump, here he is shooting my spare gun for the day, a gen 3 17. When the class ended he was on the phone with a local gun shop that had a 17 in stock. It was late on a Saturday but I heard him ask the shop owner if he'd hang around long enough for him to get there and buy it.

Went to the range this morning with a couple of purposes. First, I wanted to run a few drills with a new load to see how I liked the recoil impulse and tracking of the gun. I also wanted to try out a HD video cam and some cheap software that converts a proprietary high definition file into a regular old .wmv file. shot the august aggressive defensive solutions mmatch at the C2 range in virginia beach once again. used the usp40 custom combat and finished 9th. even though it is a usp i have had no trigger time to speak of on the .40 at speed. i had less than 100 rounds through it before the match. also switched out the v1 for the hybrid lem from my usp9sd the night before.
i ended up being the very first shooter, here is my first shot.

The challenge coin is a "Thank You For Your Service" coin that was given in the grab bags at The American Legion's Operation Warrior Comfort 2013. But that particular coin was given to me by Medal of Honor recipient Jon R. Cavaiani. Great guy, and it was my absolute pleasure that he took a good hour out of his life to talk to me. He must not have wanted his coin. :-)
Anyways, being that its a "Thank You For Your Service" coin, and I've never served, I have no intention on keeping it. Combat Diver - if you want to email me a mailing address - I'll happily pass it along to you.

This is kinda grainy, it's a still taken from an HD video. .357 that belongs to a friend (6" barrel). I have quite a few photos of pistol shooting I've taken during training days but no permission to put up peoples images on the interweb. Once I put my camera downrange on a tripod and ran it with the Nikon wireless shutter release. Got some really cool photos that day.

My opinion, yes. It's something that a lot of shooters need to work on, and I include myself in that category. Look up photos and videos of Ben Stoeger shooting, and notice how much more upright he is.

I think we may need to distinguish between competition and combat type shooting. Most competitors are upright and shoot weak ammo with tuned guns not duty loads from a factory glock. I notice Jason falla does the turtle head. I find it beneficial as I keep the gun in line with my shoulders causing the gun to recoil back not up. Of course I have very limited experience. Thoughts?

No, most competitors do not shoot tuned guns. Go to weekend matches regularly and you will find more people with production style guns then open guns.Open guns are big money and require super hot ammo to work the comp,so they shooter almost always reloads already.Very few new shooters shoot open rigs. IDPA doesn't even have gamer guns.
You don't practice with duty loads, do you? If so,I don't think Jason does. realize that most people don't and that they're range blasting ammo like PMC or WWB wouldn't even make minor PF. IPSC loads are soft because of the powder people use, which is slow burning behind a heavy bullet, but the velocity is still there.
Bringing your head to the gun is bad on so many levels. Its slower due to more movement, it creates tension in your shoulders and back, it tilts your head forward and down which brings the tops of your eye sockets into view , and since your head is between your arms somewhat, you get a hallway effect and have almost no peripheral vision left. Not very tactical.
Also, most top competition shooters's guns don't recoil because they have insanely strong hands from years of gripper work outs and shooting/dry fire. I shook Jerry Michelic's hand once at a NRA show. He could have broken it.
sent from mah gun, using my sights
Bob Vogel is that way too. He is a huge fan of grip work and his hand grip is stupid strong.
Blacknight, thanks for the insight.
I went to my 1st uspsa match last week and about half the guys there had modified guns, half of those were full-on gamer guns so I just AssUMed most uspsa matches looked like that.
Edit: I think I misinterpreted what you had previously stated. It's obvious my form is off in the pic above. I'm bent way too much at the waist. I also think i need to bring my arm and shoulders to my head more, and vice versa less. I also think that keeping everything in line for recoil management may be accomplished by keeping my elbows out, not so much the gun down. I'm gonna buy some grip workout stuff and ill bring the gopro next time I'm out. And try tweaking my stance, this may be interesting to watch in slowmo.

IDPA and USPSA both have divisions that allow or dis-allow modification. IDPA is more restrictive than USPSA or IPSC in general. USPSA has a div called Open. Anything goes, what ever helps the shooter shoot faster and more accurately. USPSA also has Production, which is way more restrictive, based on off the shelf pistols.

I got lucky. A local gun store (a huge, multi million dollar facility) actually had one on the shelf. I over paid by 100 bucks but...whatever, i didnt feel like waiting until friggin December or 2014 to get one.
I actually picked up an SP01 a week ago for 450 bones with the aluminum grips and three mags, did a little bit of trigger work and it is just as good as the shadow that i paid almost three times as much for...derp... :P

Is hunching while shooting 2 handed no bueno? I do it :(
It's suboptimal. Locking in your neck like that reduces mobility greatly - try shifting your aim to the left or right like that - it takes a while to turn or aim at something different since your whole upper body moves with the gun. It's also extra strain/stress on the shoulders.
It took a while for me to break the habit, but once I learned to keep the shoulders and neck relaxed, my shooting definitely improved.
Is hunching while shooting 2 handed no bueno? I do it :(
I was shooting string of fire as fast as possible here at a static, single target, so I was keeping recoil lower towards my COM. However, its better to pull you shoulders up some so your head is higher. I'm straining to see (eyebrows raised), and that's bad. I try to keep everything in line, if I bring my shoulders up, recoil will still be inline with my shoulders, but my head, neck and eyes will be more relaxed.
Almost everyone hunches, a little for recoil management, however, there is a point where it starts to be detrimental to target transitions and such. I had better form in the second picture. If you compare that to the pics of me previously, you will notice an improvement as time goes on. I'm not an expert, just explaining my current thoughts, that may change as I continue to put rounds downrange.

It was a NightHawk Custom, 1 of 2 made by them. It was cool, but I got a shiny nickel for it! But I have (2) Jardine Custom 1911's and a Jardine 2011 STI 5.0 in 9mm...getting a Jardine gun is rare as hen's teeth. Having (3) is just because he is a GOOD friend.

Lotta sweet shootin'
Page 11!
Here is a video of me hitting a personal best at the F.A.S.T. drill - 5.53 seconds.
The last time I shot this drill for score was in March of 2010 and I got 6.33 seconds, earning me an "Advanced" score and placing me on the Wall of Fame.
Back then I was using my Sig P226R in a Bladetech OWB holster (i think?) shooting 124gr Speer Lawman ammo. This time I'm using my M&P 9mm in an Atomic Dog OWB holster (it was cheap), and 115gr PMC.
This is the first time since that I've shot it with a timer.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yypnCG6_hs
I know I can speed up on my draw (this was shot cold) and I can improve the reload speed but either regardless I'm pretty stoked.
The night before shooting I was thinking I really wanted to get sub-6 seconds on the drill. After I shot it and looked at the timer (in bright sunlight) and thought the last shot read 5.93 and I was pretty happy. It wasn't until I was in the car on the drive back when I saw it was actually 0.40/seconds faster!

Nice Mega. Over the years I have also developed a much more upright stance with pistol & rifle. Allows for better/faster transitions for me. The upright stance has been altered lately with a slightly more head forward stance to better pick up the dot on the handgun. That pic of I just posted was my first comp using the RMR so still in the infancy stage with using the M&P with a RDS but I have noticed if I lower my head ever so slightly the dot comes into view much easier.
