I like it, and the comparable models from other makers, simply because I have no need for extra rail space - if one were to put a light at 12 o'clock, what else would one NEED to mount? AFG maybe, what else? I'd think a UWL could be worked through the slots negating a sling mount.
I've been intrigued by this type of fore-end for some time I just can't justify getting one because it seems like unnecessary length for carbine length systems which is all I have plus I'd need to ditch my standard FSBs.
If a certain site that offers DD packages were to offer these I'd definitely have a tough time not saving to get one so I could dive into trying a midlength for which these seem perfect.
I also agree with the poster who questioned the amount of material they left, seems like there's a lot left for someone with a drill and too many beers on-board to get creative. Does anyone think it's necessary for strength? I can't believe DD wouldn't have thought of it if it were possible.
12 oz.?
Why not just get an 8 oz. Centurion rail? It isn't slick tubed, but it's damn light.
When they can make it under 8 oz. I will see the appeal. Until then, if I'm going ultralight, I'll go Centurion, or KAC. (URX III)
You are right, the Centurion rail is 8 oz. The 7.0 version, that is. Without counting the stock barrel nut that remains. When the nut is taken into account it's 10.7 oz. The 9.0 version is 12.8 oz with nut. The 12.0 Centurion is listed at 14.2 oz without the nut.
The DD rail is 12" long, and weighs 12 oz. INCLUDING the proprietary nut that comes with it.
Herp da derp. I see now. Sorry Rob. Thanks for the weight figures.
It is, when compared to the Troy/VTAC version. The JP tubes seem skinny when you pick em up, compared to normal AR handguards/rails. But after you pick up the Troys, the JP tube seems large. That's what I like about the Troy tube. Does anyone know if this is even smaller? :D
