I'd say we agree more than we don't. I think it's simply a matter of threshold. For me, the threshold of evidence to confidently say masks can and will help reduce transmission has been reached - with the caveats I mentioned prior - and for you perhaps it has not.
I posit that masks plus "Distancing and frequent hand washing" will be more effective than "Distancing and frequent hand washing" without masks and i think the bulk of the evidence supports that enough to make that call.
Your mileage may differ and mine may too as more data etc evolves.
Absolutely, I can agree surgical masks do something and that cloth masks do next to nothing. Therein lies part of the problem, there is such a variety of masks and problems associated with them. Then we must consider the mounting evidence that asymptomatic people cannot infect others. Outside clinical settings, I just don’t see a benefit overall and I certainly haven’t seen evidence to convince me that there is any tangible benefit to the public who at large only wears cloth masks and does so incorrectly.
Combine that with junk science being used to justify cloth masks and a large portion of the research of mask justification based on other viruses after we’ve been told “you can’t compare influenza to COVID”.
At this point I don’t think we’ve left any stones unturned with regard to masks themselves. We are very similar in regards to seeking evidence and I appreciate the calm, level-headed discussion.
