CMMG Evolution.
While the point of 'BEST' can be argued, I dont' think anything can touch the value of the complete CMMG Evo system - get it with the Christies Products loading tool, and some BHO ready magazines, and you won't be disappointed.
Another vote for CMMG..
If you really want the "Best" it would be the CMMG India. It has a brass locking lug that actually locks the conversion into the 5.56 chamber. Very solid. Very reliable.
Next would be the CMMG Evolution. It's stainless, has forward assist, can be field stripped with no tools required, and is also very reliable.

I've used the cmmg Evo. It was a tight fit into my Noveske upper after about 100 rounds I inspected my upper and noticed the sharp edges on the rails had scratched the finish off the inside... Don't know if its normal wear or not, alittle polishing and now it fits fine
Tolerance issues. High and low end stacking. It can happen with any manufacturer when trying to put parts together.
Dave
for going on a thousand rounds, I now have a loader, and four mags, what a fun setup. just remember to lub the springs on the 22 conviction.
i'm definitely picking one of these up.
My first generation (2008) CMMG conversion has over 5,000 rounds thru it with not one hiccup using Federal #750 bulk pack from Wally World.
If you want to practice some OTB malfunctions try shooting Remington bulk packs, at least one magazine with my cmmg. Federal runs great as do any 50 round boxes
I have a CMMG evo that will not work in my LMT CQB MRP upper. It worked with my Adams Arms upper but not the LMT. The Adams Arms upper had some upper/receiver play(like most AR platforms do) and my LMT has none. This is the only reason I can figure it won't work. Fits fine but as soon as you close it up the kit bolt can't be charged... The CMMG evo is nice though. SS is so easy to clean after an outing. Wish I could have gotten more than 100 rounds through mine..
The piston is probably too long. CMMG states the Evolution will work with a piston upper with these conditions:
"Note: Compatible with any 5.56 NATO chambered AR15, including Gas Piston Systems where the piston enters the receiver no more than 1 and 7/8 inch . Only for use in 5.56 NATO chambered AR-15 rifles."
Remove the piston when using the conversion. It should work fine.

I have an old CMMG conversion in stainless with about 2k of Federal bulk pack fed via Black Dog mags that is still going great......
I have a Ciener .22 conversion in a dedicated .22 upper. It required a LOT of polishing and tuning to get working reliably, along with a Lakewood spring cut to length. There were a couple of times I wanted to scrap the project. It works great in semi and full auto now (in my RR M16), but it was definitely aggravating.
The guys I know with the CMMG kit haven't had the issues I have. If I were to do another one, I'd get the CMMG.
Look for wear marks inside the receiver.
Just use a flat bench sander or something to get a flat "grind" and take a little off the sides of the rails.

Yep, I had the same issue with my Ceiner I had to take quite a bit off of the 22 bolt assembly. After I did that and lubed the shit out of it no issues. Remember to keep a lot of lube on her and shoot quality 22 and you should have no issues
I went with the CMMG dedicate .22 upper. I've only had one trip to the range where I shot a few hundred rounds through. Worked great. The weight and feel are right on.

I bought a CMMG 22 stainless steel conversion kit for my M&P Sport and it was delivered on Tuesday. I finally got to hit the range this evening and try it out. It is great, worked without any problems except for one mag. The mag that came with the conversion is gray and the two extra mags I bought are black (add said they are made by CMMG).
On the back of each of the black mags there is a small 1/4 long plastic bump on each side of the spine. The gray mag doesn't have these bumps and the dimensions are the same for both style mags. The gray mag holds the bolt open after the last round and the two black mags didn't until I ground off the bumps.
I only did one black mag to start with, didn't want to screw up two mags if my theory was wrong! (Who, me wrong, neveeeeeeeer!) The black mag with the bump still on it jammed in the mag well of the rifle. I had to open the rifle and give the front edge of the mag a couple of good whacks with a screw driver handle to dislodge it. The other black mag without the bump worked just fine. So when I got home tonight I got the dreaded Dremel out and ground off the two bumps on the last black mag. Works just fine in the rifle now.
I was shooting CCI MINI MAGS and they shot very well at 25 yrds. I also had some Winchester Wildcat ammo that was the pits. It didn't shoot groups as much as a shotgun pattern.
Here are the last two groups I shot with the CCI ammo. These were shot standing with support under the hand guard. I am very pleased with the conversion and it was a cost effective way to do more shooting at less cost. I can't afford a dedicated upper at this time so the conversion was my only option. While not a tack driver, it's just fine for paper punching or plicking. I highly recommend it.

i was thinking about one of the cmmg do you guys get alot of leading in your barrel
I shoot 300-5-- rounds of .22. Pull the BCG, run a Boresnake while the barrel is warm.
Shoot 3-5 rounds of 5.56.
Clean properly when I get home.

Primary Arms has this one on Sale this weekend. Anyone have any comments on it. I want stainless one but for the price I thought I'd give it a try. It is the blued one with one mag.

The "bumps" on the rear rib of the mags are there to be trimmed for fit in your mag well.
I trim mine to where the mags just barely do not drop free.

What kind of license/permit does one need to be able to legally purchase a Ciener/CMMG or whatever .22LR conversion kit and have it shipped to Maryland? I'm just interested in getting the conversion kit. TIA.
Nothing, as it is not a "firearm".

Well you beat me to it Devil Dog. You got me to check out Taptalk 2. Much better than the first one.
OP there are some great discussions here on m4c about dedicated .22 uppers vs. Conversion kits. I choose a CMMG .22 upper after having a S&W .22 M&P.

Exactly! Would a person buy an AR-10 and try to launch a 6.8 or 5.56 round down the barrel??? Hell no they wouldn't, so why is it so acceptable in this application.
All you are doing is throwing a high velocity hot dog down a hallway and poking holes in paper and making noise in the process.
By a dedicated upper, or dedicated rifle like the M&P 15-22 that can be had for very little more than a "conversions" kit...we all preach to newbs here about not buying a junk gun and saving a few hundred $$$ and buying a quality Mil-Spec rifle...how is this any different?
First, my circumstances. I already have a licensed M4gery
rifle and I want to use that as my base rifle for a .22LR.
I do want a dedicated .22LR upper for it but I am not in
the US and there are none being sold in my neck of the woods.
Because I am not allowed to import firearms (uppers are
considered a firearm, per my local law) from the US, the
best option for myself is to import a conversion kit. My plan is to
have the kit shipped to a friend in the US and have the friend
ship it to me. Of course, I don't want my friend to break any US
laws. As I understand it, because the kit is not a firearm, my friend would not be breaking any US law when he ships the kit to me. Is that correct?
I've checked my local laws and I am allowed to receive the kit because it is not a firearm. TIA.
Did you reply to the correct post there, because that wasn't what he was getting at. His statement that it was "not a firearm" had to do with being able to ship it and the FFL rules for that.
But, on to your main point: the difference with 5.56 and 22LR is that they're essentially the same diameter (.223 vs .224).
While in your example, shooting 6.8 or 5.56 in a 7.62 barrel would be the "hotdog down a hallway", it would not be the case for the 22LR in the 5.56 barrel.
There are a number of valid points in the dedicated 22LR upper vs conversion kit debate, but the "hotdog" argument really isn't one of 'em.
If you do get your hands on a conversion, it can always be used to make a dedicated upper.
You just need a barrel and swap the chamber adapter out for a dedicated collar.

Basically a conversion will give you 2-3" at 50 yards. A dedicated upper will give you 1"

How will the 1/7 barrel twist work with in target groups with .22cal bullet vs a higher barrel twist that would work better?
In general, the higher the twist, the better the accuracy. I have seen decent groups from a 1/7 with the right barrel/ammo combo.
I have a Rainier 1/8 7.5" barrel that kept all shots in a 3/4" dot at 25 yards. Aguila 60 gr.
