GAU-5A Air Force clone and review

I finished my GAU-5A clone.
PSA lower
Aero upper
Daniel Defense CHF CL barrel 11.5 .69 port
Tool craft NB BCG
Cry havoc barrel extension
Colt internals
Black river tactical comp
LaRue trigger MBT
FAB defense grip
Magpul pro sights
Sba3 brace

Ammo used

Federal 223T3 62gn bonded
Federal Mk318 Mod 0 barrier 62gn
Federal SP1 SP 62gn (Gold Dot)

I shot for groups at 50 yards open sights. About 1 1/2 inches or so with all ammo. My eyes aren’t the best.
The pistol was reliable and all brass landed about 4 o’clock. This is a very cool little truck type of gun. You can put the barrel on and be ready for action in about 3 seconds. 2 latches is all you have to push together. I took the barrel off a few times and put it back on and it returned to original zero.

That is a nice looking pistol. 1.5 inches is pretty good with iron sights!

Thank you very much. I am 53 and my eyes aren't as good as before. It is a very cool weapon. Going to be my bug out/truck gun

Very cool. You should have posted it in the "Custom Build" forum. I have also built a GAU-5A inspired pistol that I've been meaning post. We used some of the same or similar components. Nice shooting.

Damn. I hadn’t seen the QRB system.

This thread just cost me several hundred bucks.

Can anyone with experience speak to repeatability of zero after removing and reinstalling the barrel? And would mounting the optic on the handguard make a difference as opposed to on the upper receiver?

My post contains my builds to replicate my issue guns while in the Air Force. The main difference between the GAU and the XM is the GAU lacks a forward assist, though some GAUs had them. The Air Force can recycle gun parts like nobody's business.

I took it off, shook it up and reinstalled it numerous times. No change in zero. It’s awesome. Now my new truck gun. I put a red dot on it as well.

One thing I notice from the articles is that the Air Force specifically rejected optics out of a concern that they might not hold zero through a 16-g ejection sequence from launch to landing.

Question to the crowd: Do we know of any compact optics that are good for 200yd and can take that kind of curbstomping and still be reliable?

Many are. I am really happy with Holosun 510c. I like it because it’s smaller and works for this build. There are many good ones though.

I have many different optics. Holosun is the best bang for the buck in my opinion. I agree with you.

Good for 200yd and compact, sure. Good for out-the-door parajumps which are usually only about 6 g's, maybe... the hard part is that 16-g rocket ride getting thrown out of a crippled jet.

Sixteen g is tiny compared to the instantaneous acceleration produced by drops, impacts, and even recoil. Why would it be a problem?

I love those old rifles, everything you need, nothing you don’t (like brass deflectors and forward assists). Just a clean design (would look even better if the charging handle was in the carrying handle like the original AR10).
