A few months ago Beretta released in Europe the semiautomatic version of its newest submachine gun, the PMX. This civilian version of the new main firearm of the Italian Carabinieri, named PMXs, had no known delivery schedule to the USA. We now have confirmation that it will soon reach the American market.

The Carabinieri (Italian Military Police) recently started replacing their venerable Beretta PM12S with new PMX submachine guns, acquiring 5,000 firearms in late 2018. According to Beretta, the Carabinieri were directly involved in the development of the firearm, to ensure that it would match their requirements.

One of these requirements is the presence of “back-up sights on the back-up sights”: even when the folding sights are not deployed, small pistol-like sights protruding on top can be used for practical aiming. Among the requirements are also the ambidextrous controls and the possibility to swap the charging handle side. The firearm is fed by translucent 20 or 30-round magazines.

Let’s hope not, gLoCk mags are not the universal requirement for SMG’s anywhere.

Let’s hope it comes with real mags that work really well.

Right, even with my b&t I bought the one with the mags the gun was designed for. I’ll bet when Glock drops their carbine (any day now!) it won’t even take them. Lol

I am all over one of these as long as they are lest than $1500. I certainly think these merit a premium over the cz and beretta is typically pretty reasonable (in the us).

Yeah I know. It sucks but so does their customer service. It’s why I can’t buy a new Beretta product. I refuse to give them anymore money.

92 magazines go from double column to single column. Virtually all modern submachineguns feed from a double column at the top. Also, the 92 magazines are slanted while the full double column magazines are not. Like all pistol magazines, the 92 magazines are just not an efficient use of space when compared to typical submachinegun magazines. I am surprised that they have not seemed to curve the magazine a bit as they're typically more reliable in 9mm when designed that way.

I already have the SP5, SP5k and B&T APC 9 pro, all SBRed. I also have a CMMG Mk9T 16” (basically a Colt clone). Not sure what the PMX offers over my B&T.

I'm a huge fan. I got to play with one a few months back and greatly preferred the lower to the one that came on my P26. Hoping parts will be available for those that want to convert.

I'm somewhat interested in these. I've been weighing my options between a Scorpion or a KUSA KP-9. I don't know if the PMX is quite worth the extra $$, though.

Most angle feed mags suck for subguns and SBRs. Beretta already made the CX4 Storm if that is what you want.

While I am a huge fan of "one example of each", at some point designs become redundant and the money is better spent supporting the examples that already exist in your collection. I don't think this Beretta offers anything unique or is so desirable / affordable that a person would be stupid to not buy one.

For the advanced collector there are better options for the same money, for the entry level shooter there are better options for the same money. The only person I can see who "must have" something like this are people who are dedicated to collecting Beretta firearms specifically in the same way there are some HK collectors who buy every variant, even the really stupid ones.

I have b&t's With both recievers and ARs. I'm a Langdon tactical Beretta dork and would be all over one of these if it took 92 mags.

B&T confirmed they are supplying magazine bodies, so it might be a good fit for those already with B&T guns using their mags.

That's very interesting. I wonder if B&T's magazines will work as-is or if they'll require a different follower.

I was able to pickup a PMXs for $1,000 + shipping + tax + transfer. I haven't really had a chance to do anything other than fondle it yet, but it appears well made, has a smooth action and the trigger is nice.

I shot the PMXs for the first time today. I put 140rds of Geco 124gr FMJ and 50rds of Speer Lawman 147gr TMJ through it. The latter was with a TiRant 9 suppressor on it. It functioned 100% and the accuracy was really good. The bullets went right where I wanted them to go. It definitely needs a brace or a stock, but it did perform well as-is. The spent cases went a bit far for my liking, so I'd say that it's slightly undersprung. Ergonomically, my only complaint is that the safety on the right side of the pistol can get in the way depending on how you grip it. I'll see if there's a way to delete it. The action is smooth and the bolt locked back on every empty magazine. I'm definitely happy that I purchased it.

I have to admit, I'm getting more and more curious about this. I've abandoned the 9mm AK route I was thinking before, and now I'm really weighing the PMXs against the B&T GHM9. I can find them within $100 of each other (with the PMXs being the cheaper one).

Aesthetically, I prefer the Beretta. But the B&T has been around a bit longer and an established reputation (and aftermarket). I would be very concerned about getting the PMXs only to have Beretta decide they were too late to market and abandoning it since it didn't get a big enough response.

I love tiger stripe and like this Beretta, so I decided to get the limited-edition tiger stripe version. It appears to be identical to the black version except for the finish.

That looks really nice. I wish the barrel was a tad bit shorter. That way when a trilug is added it wouldn’t sit a mile out. Looks like they just kept the internals from the original metal SMG and swapped to a polymer shell (I know there’s more to it than that). But if it works fine, and just needs a weight reduction/modularity upgrade, it makes a lot of sense. Pretty neat.

So I ended up finding a really good deal on a GHM9 and went that route. The prospect of getting a Lingle lower later on to use Scorpion mags (ironically) is too great.

But today I did get to handle a PMXs at my local shop. I was impressed. It felt very high quality in the hands, and my initial reaction was that maybe I should have gotten it instead of the GHM9. It seems like a really nice option.

I would be curious to know if the KCI B&T mags would work in the Beretta. Theoretically they should, right? Seems like a cheaper source ($17 per) than the $50 they otherwise cost if you can find them. KCIs have metal feed lips, too.
