Recommend a trigger, please...

When I put together my "precision" rifle (see other threads), I used a BCM lower that came with BCM's "PNT" trigger.

That trigger never bothered me. It's certainly better than some of the awful USGI triggers, but it's a bit grittier and heavier than the triggers in my other ARs — a 2008-vintage trigger by Bill Springfield, and Geissele QMS. (The OEM trigger in my S&W 15-22 is also better.)

Now that I'm using this lower for "precision" shooting, the trigger bugs me.

Before I buy another QMS (or even an ACT), is there some other comparable (<$75) option out there that I should consider?

The recently discussed Centurion trigger is what you want. You'll have to scrape an extra $20 for your budget, but it's worth it. Pappabear just gave me one for my ACOG 14.5, and it's the best value out there.

I really like a two-stage trigger (my first rifles were an M1 Carbine and an M14-type), and $95 MSRP is do-able...

I have enough into this rifle (nevermind what ammo or reloading components cost) that an extra $20 would be worth it.

That's it. I can tell you it's a nice step up from the ALG it replaced. The ALG never bugged me until I was shooting magnified optics on paper. The centurion broke in one day. (started with a mild creep)

I picked up one and like it.
I have a Ruger two stage that's about the same price and is a bit lighter than the AST.

I have a BCM PNT that has a bit of creep and will most likely get swapped out for a Centurion.

No, it needed a bit of breaking in, and MarkM is saying that it took him a day to do so.

Yes. I wrote that poorly. It broke in.... in a few rounds of dry and live fire.

I'm afraid this is a stupid question (because it was already asked and vaguely answered in that other thread), but why would I pay $90 for the Centurion version when I can buy Schmid's 2-stage for $60ish?

Go read the thread on the Centurion trigger. They are not the same.

I’ll have to give the Centurion trigger a whirl. Currently I have been a huge fan of Larue’s two stage for $65-85 market pricing. I’ve got several G triggers, RR, and KAC, and the Larue simply rocks, it’s the only product of theirs I see as worth buying over other options

I just ordered another one.

OK, I get it... Schmid is casting all the basic metal parts, and every company is spec'ing a different finish, geometry, whatever, so they all look alike and use the same parts, but they're not the same.


Now I'm on the fence, looking at either a Larue MBT-2S or the Centurion AST... Either would be $95, OTD.


I can get a Geissele G2S for $134, but spending another $40 on top of "excellent" seems decadent.


Decisions, decisions...

... and I just got out all three of my ARs to confirm what I thought, and I was right...

The Springfield job in my old CMMG and the ALG QMS (or is it an ACT) are both great: No discernable travel at all, just a press and a break like snapping a carrot.

The PNT in the BCM/WOA gun is creepy and gritty... Not bad for shooting fast, but awful at the bench.

For extra grins, I busted out my "Loaded" M1A with it's "NM" trigger, and it's fabulous: A long easy first stage, then a clear "wall," and then it breaks like a glass rod. Really. I used to break glass rods for a living, pulling pipets in a lab. I'm not bullshitting.

When I had the BCM/WOA gun out yesterday with my Savage FCP-SR ("Accu-Trigger"), the comparison was like Roseanne Barr and Giselle Bundchen.


Cast parts make me wary, and I'm a fan of tool steel, and I keep reading reports that the Centurion's first stage is creepy, so I'm about to order the Larue...

(I always thought of Larue stuff as hoity-toity, and I'm happily surprised that the MBT-2S is my price range.)

You've read that the Centurion's first stage is creepy.....I'm not sure what that means. The trigger has to move in the first stage for it to function, so what's the difference between the movement being take-up versus the movement being creep? Any trigger movement after the wall is reached is definitely creep, and neither of my Centurions have any creep at all.

The only negative aspect I've found regarding the MBT is the shape of the trigger surface and the squareness of the outer edges. It definitely feels unlike any of my other AR triggers, but not unlike some of my bolt gun triggers. The MBT's reset might be softer than the Centurion's if that's important to you.

I guess I'm taking the word of the guys who bought both Aero's house-brand Schmid trigger and Centurion's and said they're radically different.

It might be just Kool-Aide, but I'm guessing that Centurion specs a better polish/hone, and maybe different angles on the engagement surfaces, maybe even different spring weights.

I wouldn't keep the GI, even if I had to deal with Charlie's.

The Criterion seems to be the Schmid variant to pick. Aero had Schmids on sale for $50 apiece around Christmas. If you use a GI disconnector spring and cut off a coil to a coil-and-a-half you get a very nice break around 3.5 to 4 pounds.

There are so many two-stage options out there now that you don't have to suffer through the OEM single-stage trigger.

I ran out of SSA-E's for my latest rifle build. I had a SIONICS enhanced MIL-Spec sitting in a box that I used until the next G-Trigger sale. It is actually quite good and worth checking out as well.

Never used the Criterion mentioned here, so no basis for comparison.

FWIW, I have vague memories of people saying that Larue is a jerk, but I couldn't remember for sure. It's hard to find anybody that doesn't like his trigger, and $95 shipped seems like a deal.

I didn't buy from Charlie's, but rather from IJ Tactical. After I put the MBT-2S in my cart on Charlie's website, he sent me the discount code (but by then I had ordered from IJ...).

Well, he is from a long line of them over there. I didn't stay long enough to even figure out who was who at the time, but figured out quickly it wasn't for me personally.
