Anyone know anything about Remington Police pump-action rifles?

I was at a gunshop yesterday and noticed two rifles that caught my eye, something I have never seen and that the people at the shop didn't know much about. Both are marked Remington Police, both magazine fed, one in 308 and the other 5.56. The 308 has a flush magazine of maybe 4-5 shots, the 5.56 takes AR15 magazines. Both have ghost ring sights from a company called Wilson Combat, something I thought was pretty interesting. At first glance I thought they were shotguns but then counter guy saw me looking and said "Are you looking at the pump rifles, pretty neat aren't they?" then handed me one. I have no idea why but I thought they were pretty cool, different to say the least. Both are new in the box, he said they took them as partial downpayment on some sort of fancy vintage shotgun and are asking $550 each.

About all I could find online is that they seem to be popular and well thought of in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, I'm assuming due to their restrictive laws.
I'm not a huge fan of shotguns but a pump rifle in something other than 22 seems cool.
Does anyone happen to own one or know anything about them?

The 7600 series were big game hunting rifles based on the design of the 870 shotgun. The one's that you were looking at are the police versions (synthetic stocks, ghost rings, etc) also based on the police-style 870's.

The 7600 series is still very popular with hunters in PA since semi autos have been banned for hunting until very recently. My grandfather hunted with an older 760 Gamemaster for most of his adult life and I remember it being finicky with certain loads and prone to not cycling easily. The 7600 has a redesigned lug arrangement that made it much more reliable.

As far as the AR15 mags, they typically don't feed well in bolt action rifles- not sure if they would in pumps, either.

For $550 I'd buy one in .308 to have an extra lightweight hunting rig. IIRC, they are four-round mags.

Check the auction sites they're going for quite a bit more than $550

The 223 makes no sense to me. But the 308 would be a solid patrol option if you had to shoot an asshole thru auto glass.

Bigger mags were available for police use; a buddy I've lost touch with who was career Military Police then civil LE was a big fan of these in his duty days and looking for more of those mags.

My brother transitioned from patrolling to more administrative duties. He had to trade his HK for a Rem pump 223. He says he has no issues with it.

I think they are kind of neat, but would prefer even a Mini 14 to a pump gun as an officer.

No doubt. If you're shooting a 223 long gun, it might as well have some capacity and autoloading.

I took your advice, poked around on several auction sites and found that even used both Police models sell from $1-2k
The next morning was an off day so I went down and bought them both, $1055 and out the door :smile:

No clue what I'm going to do with them but at minimum I can flip them, maybe sell one and keep the other for free?
Either way they intrigue me for some reason so I'll mess around with them for a bit before deciding

Yes I found US made 10 round magazines for the 308, and the other takes AR magazines which I just bought a bunch of.

Agreed. I have shot one, and was underwhelmed.

I had some time to take the 7615 out behind the house twice now and have to say that the thing is pretty darn fun, like an adult shooting gallery gun :happy: I shot four boxes through it, so two hundred rounds, not a single issue at all. I was hitting the plate at 100 yards quick and easy with just the peep sight, the closer ones weren't even a challenge. I think it may be a keeper as working the slide made me giggle like a kid. I still haven't shot the 308 yet as I haven't picked up any ammunition for it.

I can only speak to reliability for 200 rounds, put after poking around more on line, reliability and longevity do not seem to be an issue with the folks who have been running them for many years. As I said above they seem to be really popular in Australia, NZ, SA, and on their forums they are spoken highly of, including by hunters and ranchers.

Back in the mid-2000s, I attended a police carbine instructors course, and two guys from an airport police department showed up with the .223 versions. They performed poorly in a number of ways compared to the M4s almost everyone else was using. Admittedly, a lot of the problems had to do with the high round counts in a training environment (I remember the shots stringing badly once the barrels were hot), but after the course, I heard they convinced the powers that be to switch to M4s. The whole reason they chose the pumps in the first place was purely cosmetic (not scary looking).

With all the commie states passing AWBs, I wish a quality manufacturer would bring back the IMI Timberwolf.

My department had 2 of them in .243win when I first got on in 1989. They were used for sniper school attendees. I was a little befuddled but I found out they were chosen by the then police chief who was always trying to steer away from any thing that looked military.

To attend. They both passed, but back then the FBI sniper school wasn't as difficult as it is now.

It was more of a test of the shooters abilities rather than the equipments capabilities.

I remember shooting one of the rifles around 1998 and believe it or not it was a 1.5 to two MOA rifle at 200 yards.

I recently picked up a pair of them at a ranch auction. I went there looking for some odds & ends and came across a bunch of hunting rifles and shotguns, none of which I knew anything about. I saw the Timberwolf laying on top of the box, at first I thought it was a little pump 410 given the thickness of the barrel. But when I picked it up I discovered it was 357, then found the box had a second one still inside. Everyone went crazy bidding on all the other stuff, when they got to these no one seemed interested. Being a sucker for 357 lever actions I couldn't resist and walked away with both for about $800 which I thought was a steal. A bit heavy but fun to shoot, I put a red dot on one and anything within 100 gets thumped quickly.

I still haven't shot the 308 yet as Ive been pretty busy and have no idea what to shoot out of it.
Someone suggested Hornady 110gr TAP Urban as its supposed to be light recoiling but devastating on bad people.
I was thinking of putting a 1-4 or 1-6 scope on it
