Try This if you have Diabetic Neuropathy (Tingling Feet)

We discuss supplements on this forum and often it's debatable if a supplement really does anything or not.

I will tell you of one supplement that absolutely cures diabetic neuropathy. Kills it. Annihilates it.

It takes time. Months even. You may have to adjust the dose to your body. But you will be pleased.

I'm talking Magnesium Citrate.

Do NOT confuse it with Magnesium Oxide. Magnesium oxide is poorly absorbed. It causes loose bowel movements (please don't ask me how I know).

Make sure you take Magnesium CITRATE.

I have taken it twice a day for about a year now, and not only do I not suffer from diabetic neuropathy anymore, I'm actually beginning to get the normal feeling back in my feet.

Supposedly Magnesium works best with Vitamin D3, and I do take the two together. I take 5,000 IU of D3 once a day, and 200 mg of Magnesium Citrate twice a day. Once again, you may have to adjust the dose to your body, but definitely try it!

I think diabetes may in fact be an undiscovered symptom of Magnesium and Vitamin D deficiency.

I'm not a nutritionist, but I have a pet theory that diabetes is caused by lack of sunlight. Modern people spend most of their time indoors (me included, even at the ranch!), whereas our ancestors were outside most of the time.

Thank you for this. I will try this...I went undiagnosed with Type 2 diabetes for many years because I didn't want to go to the doc despite experiencing classic s/s of the disease. Although I'm doing well (can always be better) with oral meds, diet, and exercise, my feet are a constant, never ending, nightmare of tingling, pins-and-needles, etc. The neuropathy is so bad that I have trouble getting to sleep sometimes and my balance is affected. Although I've tried a couple of off-label prescription treatments, the juice wasn't worth the squeeze when dealing with the associated side effects of those drugs.

So, yeah, I'll give this a long-term shot even when/if someone comes on here and pronounces it snake oil. I'm not familiar with this one, but it's worth a shot.

My only disclaimer is that I take a lot of things (like Pycnogenol) that I'm sure Will Brink will pronounce worthless, but I stand by my statement that my feet were in constant agony like yours until I started taking Magnesium Citrate.

I will also say that when I was travelling and didn't take quite my normal dose for a few days, the tingling returned but at a very minimal level. I upped the dose for a few days after that and the symptoms were gone again.

That to me reinforces that it's actually the Magnesium doing the job rather than the "mix" of different stuff I take. Once again, supposedly vitamin D3 makes the Magnesium work better, and I won't argue that point. All I know is that when I started taking Magnesium Citrate I noticed a gradual easing of the needles and pins feeling in my feet, followed by mild numbness in areas of the bottoms of my feet, followed by my current condition which is the feeling gradually coming back into my feet. I'm betting in another few months my feet will feel 100% normal, assuming there was no permanent nerve damage.

I currently only take Zinc occasionally, but sounds like it might be of benefit. I'm thinking I get the other things from food.

It's very difficult to damn near impossible to get the doses used in clinical studies from food alone. Look at the doses used that found benefits, look for foods that contain them, calculate how much you'd need to eat to get that dose... Way easier to pop the dang pill, which is no on way advising people to not follow a healthy nutrition plan. In my view, they go hand in hand and no vite pill can replace (hence why they are called "supplements" ) good nutrition.

And do NOT overdose on the Zinc, either. I never take more than 50 mg's a day.

During my early days of supplementation, I popped Zinc pills like M & M's. I ended up nauseous, lightheaded, unable to hold any food down. Yep. I read up on the symptoms of Zinc overdose and they hit me to a 'T'.

From then on I watched my doses.

As with all things, the dose makes the poison, and doing the research to know what's too little, what's therapeutic, and what's potentially too much, is the issue. I wouldn't recommend anyone "I popped Zinc pills like M & M's" and there's no data to support doing so, other than very short period of time during the early onset of a viral infection/cold. Which again factors in the 3Ds: dose, drug, duration.

There's risk to benefit in every choice we make and smart choices reduces risk and increases benefits. Sounds like you went from one extreme to another with zinc.

In my college days I believed "more is better". I took the Stresstabs brand and was convinced it helped me stay awake for long study and party sessions. I wasn't educated in supplementation enough to know or care that dosage mattered (Hell, I didn't watch my doses of beer; why would I care about doses of vitamins?).

Only later did I start to realize that taking supplements is like reloading ammunition--enough is enough and too much is dangerous.

Sounds good. If I remember correctly you should get some mild relief before that. If in 2-3 months you don't notice any difference then you probably need to up the dose. I had to go from one pill a day to two because the initial benefit wasn't good enough. I've been taking it for about a year now and only in the last couple-three months have I noticed a dramatic difference.

I looked it up and it's primary use is its a laxative. Are you trying to make a joke?

This is why I cautioned to use Magnesium CITRATE, and NOT Magnesium OXIDE. I believe I covered this in one of my posts above. Yes, Magnesium is an ingredient in some laxatives. I have not noticed a laxative effect with Magnesium Citrate.

If anyone does experience problems, do feel free to report it.

I take 200 mg in the morning and 200 before bed. The directions on the bottle say to double that. I have not felt the need to take a full dose.

As with any supplement you take, there may be side effects.

But once again, take Magnesium CITRATE and for the love of Pete do NOT take Magnesium OXIDE or you probably will be in the bathroom a lot.

Have you tried taking Alpha Lipoic Acid for neuropathy? It is my understanding it will deplete some of the B-6 in your system, so you have to take a Vitamin B-6 or B100 complex supplement.

One week in and I have not experienced any laxative effects. Another note is that I started with a tablet in the morning with the D3 and other meds and a tablet at night along with night time meds. My neuropathy is severe...

Since I knew I was going to be near a bathroom most of this weekend I deliberately double-dosed myself yesterday morning. I didn't notice even a small change in my bowel habits as a result. I did notice somewhat of an increase in how much feeling I have in the bottoms of my feet, though.

As stated earlier, the prickly feeling in my feet has been gone for months but I still experience some numbness (which is gradually abating). Since double-dosing yesterday I perceive more feeling in the bottoms of my feet.. I may experiment with increasing the dose at least in the mornings.

For those of you still following this thread, I'm beginning to investigate Goldenseal (berberine) as a way to attack diabetes from the back end:

Doc thanks for this info ! I just saw it the other day and took a keen interest ! This is for my Wife who has severe neuropathy in her feet ! Just to give you a ideal she stepped on a nail a week or so ago & NEVER felt it till she came in the house and took her sneaker off ! So lets just say she could use any help she can get. I will follow this thread now for sure and will be grabbing some pills for her very shortly ! I did find them online, are these something that would be in a normal drug store or a Wallmart ? Are there certain brands you would recommend or are they all pretty much the same ? Thanks for any info. Thanks again and will keep you posted on how we make out ! :)

Magnesium Citrate usually has to be purchased from a health food store or Amazon.com. Goldenseal ditto.

An update on Goldenseal: I immediately noticed I don't suffer from thirst all day long, and I don't urinate as much, so it must be doing something. I perceived a slight tendency toward looser bowel movements when I first started it, but not so much now. That may have been due to something I ate or drank and not the Goldenseal.

Read up on Goldenseal. Some sources claim it's as good as a prescription diabetes drug.

It's been right at five months since I started with magnesium citrate and D3, so I thought I'd report in and let y'all know how it's going. The best way to put it is that the jury is still out. I "think" my feet have become a little easier to live with over the last part of the summer, but the change, if any, has been very, very gradual. There haven't been any "ah ha" moments in which I've noticed a distinct difference...just a sort of underlying thought that maybe they don't burn/tingle as much as they did a few months ago. I don't know if my progress qualifies as "mild relief," but it's enough to encourage me to keep going.

I made a commitment to continue this for one year and caught no flack from my doc. I've been taking one tablet twice daily (morning and night with other meds), so I have no real plans to change the dosage. I am thinking about combining both tablets and taking them together at night. I'm going to stick with it and will try to report back more frequently if anyone is interested.

If you do that, please report any changes, including if it causes loose bowel issues.

I will say that "Once in a while" I notice a little tingling return and on those days I'll take an extra dose at lunch and that usually kills it.

So, I got actual lab results today.

My cholesterol was good. Ditto Triglycerides. My A1-C was just barely into the diabetic range--like by ONE notch. Seriously. ONE notch. The doctor's exact words were (paraphrasing), "If you just lose a little weight and exercise more you will end up forgetting you even have diabetes. "

The only area where I was starkly deficient was in regards to blood pressure. Mine is high. I will be taking Losartan now.

So, did the Magnesium Citrate keep my cholesterol/triglyceride/A1-C numbers lower than they might have been? Hard to say since I started supplementing with Magnesium Citrate a long, long time before I actually went to a doctor for real numbers. I started taking Mg for neuropathy symptoms and continued when it helped. Maybe my numbers would be worse without the Mg?

Logically, I'm in my mid-fifties, slightly overweight, eat poorly, drink too much, get too little exercise (believe it or not I mostly drive around the ranch), and in general live more like Keith Richards than Richard Simmons.

My take: Except for the blood pressure (which I now take real meds for), I'm thinking my other numbers should have been horrible. They were actually a pleasant surprise.

I'm of the opinion that continuing to supplement with Magnesium Citrate is at least worth the money spent on a bottle of pills. The virtual elimination of neuropathy symptoms ALONE make it worth the purchase price. Full disclosure: I know another gentleman who takes Lyrica for neuropathy and he is what he describes as "borderline diabetic." So the question is whether Magnesium Citrate might actually reduce one's A1-C or or not. I like to think it does. I was betting I'd be put on diabetic meds today, but the doctor said it wasn't necessary.

I plan to continue to supplement with Goldenseal (berberine) as well, since the more I read the more I conclude that some really smart people are looking into it being a good alternative to Metformin.

As always, I'M NOT A DOCTOR. This information is for your consideration only.

If any of y'all run into trouble tolerating oral Mg supplements, I'd suggest giving topical Magnesium Oil a try. I get the squirts even looking at a Magnesium Citrate pill, but I tolerate topical Magnesium Oil with no issues.

The name is odd, because it's not an oil at all...Just a highly saturated aqueous solution of MgCl. It does sort of fell oily on the skin, though.

I don't have diabetes or any neuro conditions, but I've been using it to help sleep and to control muscle cramping in my legs while I sleep. Seems pretty effective!

I've been happy with the Ancient Minerals brand. You can get it on Amazon...

I've found the best cure for the sugars neuropathy is to not end up as a massively obese diabetic to begin with.

Diet and exercise has always been a highly successful combination for me.

There are a lot of diabetics who are not massively obese.

Age has a lot to do with it too. I don't know how old you are but just because you are healthy right now doesn't mean you can't develop something later.

UPDATE:

I'm discontinuing my use of Goldenseal unless I confirm it's not the culprit. Lately I've had a bout with diarrhea and urgent needs to run to the bathroom to do number two.

Facts:

1. My doctor says there is an intestinal virus going around that lasts a week or more.
2. I've only been taking Goldenseal for a couple of months, and recently started taking Losartan
3. I've had two bouts with diarrhea lasting more than a couple of days, with a break of a few days in between bouts
4. The breaks in diarrhea coincidentally occurred when I suspended taking Goldenseal, and started up again within a few days of resuming
5. I also take Ashwaganda, but only took one dose and it was several days before the second bout of diarrhea

Conclusions:

After my experiences, I did some reading about Goldenseal on the internet. It is VERY difficult to find in-depth information on it, since most websites tout the benefits because they are trying to sell the product. I found only scant mention of diarrhea associated with Goldenseal, but it is a possible side effect due to Goldenseal's antibiotic effect. My conclusion: there is a possiblity that this product was harming my good intestinal bacteria, leading to diarrhea.

I discontinued Goldenseal and started taking a pro-biotic. Magically in less than 24 hours my bout with diarrhea had so abruptly ceased that it surprised me.

I think it's likely that either Goldenseal can cause diarrhea if you take it regularly, or something about it interacts negatively with Losartan that creates a toxin your body tries to flush in the best way it knows how.

Either way, unless I discover some other obvious cause, I'm banning Goldenseal from further consumption.

I should point out that I never discontinued Magnesium Citrate at any time during my problems.

I've been doing some reading, and some people claim that L-Taurine is good for neuropathy also. I have not personally tried it, but those of you who cannot tolerate Magnesium Citrate might find some relief in L-Taurine.

THERE ARE MANY CAUTIONS ABOUT L-TAURINE, HOWEVER, SO YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY DO SOME RESEARCH ON YOUR OWN BEFORE YOU TRY IT.

That is an interesting theory about the lack of sunlight. I would take it one step farther and say that at least some people's problems come from being climate controlled for lack of better terminology. What I mean by that is so many people are always in 70 degrees ac or heated conditions. Humans were meant to have fight to survive. There are some therorys that suggest that is what is behind some of the auto immune diseases. This could include diabetes? I'm not a doctor but if you read about the Iceman it makes you wonder. Something to think about.

ETA. In the book "Becoming The Iceman" Brooke Robinson writes about a study done with diabetics. They would sit in a 50 degree room for several hours a day. That's it nothing else. Many of them showed improvements with there diabetes and some of them lost weight due to brown fat. At least worth looking into.

If any of you are having trouble with Magnesium Citrate, I have started taking Magnesium Glycinate and it seems to be just as effective (the health food store was out of citrate).

BTW: I have started taking L-Citrulline again with no ill effects. I had discontinued use of it because of a handful of internet bloggers complaining it caused their neuropathy. I stopped taking it for a few weeks and then started taking it again to see if any neuropathy returned. It did NOT.

Throughout this process, the tingling in my feet has been nonexistent to extremely rare (like if I forgot a dose of Magnesium Citrate). I do, however, still have some numbness in my foot pads. If anything, the Magnesium Glycinate is better at the neuropathy and numbness overall, but not dramatically so. When I use up my last few doses of Citrate I plan to supplement strictly with Glycinate for a while and see if the numbness is alleviated in addition to the tingling.

I suspect it won't: the numbness may be due to damage already done.

Magnesium and B6 is supposed to be good for kidney stones. Magnesium in general is supposed to impact several things. Anxiety, sleep, ext.

You might want to try adding B6 to the Mag. Seems like the two are pretty big time universal positives.

So, Gents, several months have gone by. How are you doing with the supplement?

I have to say that even though I started this thread touting the benefits of Magnesium CITRATE, I have come to the conclusion that Magnesium GLYCINATE is actually more effective.

What say you?

Hey Doc,yea its been awhile and figured I would check in. Well Wife has been taking Mag Citrate 200mg twice a day for a few months, actually two bottles worth @90 pills per bottle. (Puritans Pride Brand) and although she has not gained anymore feeling or reduction in tingling when we go to her foot Doc (Specialist/Podiatrist) he says that she has good pulse and blood flow through her feet. We talked to him about it and he was for anything that could help and was on board with the supplement. Except for an occasional spot here or there her feet are doing OK. We are about out of the Mag Citrate so will be ordering some Glycinate. The Glycinate seems a little harder to find but have found a few Online places that have it,I see Natures Pride makes it and Wally World caries that brand so will look there today. We will give this a good shot and hope to see improvement's,,will keep ya posted !

UPDATE:

The last couple of months the Magnesium seemed to be less effective for some reason.

I've been put on Metoprolol and a higher dose of Losartan/HCTZ, so that could be a factor.

But I wanted to wait until I had tried some fixes before posting again.

In short, there for a while it seemed like at times the tingling was back, but at a lower level than before I started the Magnesium.

After trying different things, I found out that taking a chewable Vitamin C enhanced the effect and I'm now back to no tingling except on rare occasions.

--My exercise regimen is just barely more than it was, so that might contribute a little bit

I think the reason the Vite C helped is because it's somewhat of a blood thinner (or at least some of the sources I've consulted say so). It's actually helping my feet get slightly better circulation. In fact it's working so well that I cut back my twice-a-day Magnesium to just once.

Take it for what you will: Maybe the vitamin C would work without the Magnesium? I had such good results for a long time with Magnesium Citrate and Glycinate alone that I don't think I'll discontinue it. But I definitely think the Vitamin C is somehow enhancing the effect.

I understand that not everyone can provide themselves with expensive drugs and delicacies to even out their metabolism and improve nutrition. We get extremely high Plant Nitrates. They help improve circulation. My husband has type 2 diabetes and my child has type 1 diabetes. It's all very hard, but to cope, you have to help yourself. I just can't make food that way. Everyone has to eat separately and make something fresh all the time. It takes a lot of time. And for my daughter I also take capsules to make her feel better.

FYI, Alpha Lipoic Acid appears to help with Peripheral Neuropathy and is used for such in Germany and some others I recall.
