I've done exactly that with a Romanian RPK receivered rifle.
Its heavy. 20 rd mags helped. I sold it due to the weight and after trying to hit targets at 250-300 yds in slightly windy conditions. (10-20 mph. The cartridge just isn't up to it. High quality hand loads would help of course. Would still have that long-travel trigger and no BHO.
It helped me decide that the next step in performance over 5.56 isn't .300 blk, 6.8, or 7.62x39 but .308. (Or one of the Creedmor calibers that I have no experience with)
A .308 (or Creedmor cal) AR is the way to go for an accurate semi auto rifle if 5.56 isnt "enough".
No, they arent as ruggedly reliable as a well-built Kalashnikov-style rifle. But probably "reliable enough" and the pros outweigh the cons for the role.
