I don’t own any revolvers but would like to have one for range shooting. I was thinking 357 mag so I can also run 38. I like the looks and features of the models listed in the title but was hoping for some advice from those that have significant time or experience with the 686 or 627.
Imho... Since you said "range shooting", the V-Comp is a no-brainer. Snubbies are fun to shoot, but they are not great range guns. That full size V-Comp will be a tack driver. I have it's big brother, the 629 V-Comp and love it. It's an heirloom piece.

Haha I thought you might use the buy once, cry once logic as a suggestion. I don’t necessarily disagree since I’ll only be buying one revolver and it would be great to have all the boxes checked on the wants list.
Is it for home defense, a plinker or for competition? A competition revolver can only be 4”, I believe. I have a PC 627 8 Shot 5”. Recoil is very manageable. It is a bit impractical for CCW but I have done it. There’s a Snubby version but the trade off is velocity.

Having shot Det-Sog's V-Comp 629.... get the V-Comp. That thing is a laser.
All of my revolvers are very accurate. M18 .22 LR, M13, 3" .357, M686-1 .357, cut down Colt M1918 .45acp all are capable extremely good accuracy. The 3" M13 is uncanny accurate with 147 to 160 grain bullets.
