Start with Vickers Guide Vol. 1. Just incredible.
If you are willing to download, here is one of the best books you'll find:
https://pdfcoffee.com/the-black-rifl...-pdf-free.html
or, if you really want to go whole hog:
https://www.amazon.com/Black-Rifle-R.../dp/0889351155
The book may also be available on interlibrary loan through your public library.
Here's another, use the look inside feature: https://www.amazon.com/AR15-Rifle-Sh...rmat=4&depth=1
Here's an overview in article form: https://smallwarsjournal.com/jrnl/ar...he-ar-15-rifle
The Blake Stevens / Collector Grade Publications books "Black Rifle I & II" are probably the gold standard of anything ever written about the AR-15 rifle, the Vickers Guide books are the first thing I've ever seen that is as good and maybe even better. The reference collection built for the books, combined with access to the collections of Reed Knight and other owners of super rares, is in itself astonishing. The detailed photographs and specific associated history are probably unprecedented.
Given that that second editions are now available for purchase, I can't think of a single reason to not start there first.
