Was it though? He's keeping the focus on the most radical and boisterous element of the Democratic party. The ones who espouse communist views, want open borders and hate law enforcement. The ones who want to steal money from people who aren't like them, to give to people who are. The longer he controls the identity of the Democratic party by highlighting these radical leftists, the more centrists he's going to turn against them.
No one cares what the histrionic diehards have to say, they've already cast their votes. It's the undecided he has to turn against them, and he is. He also has to keep the fire lit under his diehard fans. I'd personally rather have him take a "hide and watch" approach, but that's not his style. He's doing the only thing he knows how to do. Time will tell if that's enough.
