I have never done it and I have never seen any scoped marred or eaten up due to imperfections in rings and I over tight my rings on average. If you bought mediocre rings, do it only if your handy and don't over do it.

Back in the day I bought a lapping bar to do this with rings that twisted into the base, so I could get them straight before dropping the scope in. Hunting-type bolt guns. I lapped a few rings because I had it. I haven’t bothered in about a decade and a half, but I’m no Molon.
I’m not convinced that it is necessary today.
