I preferred Edward Hardwicke as Watson. The fact that Watson was not a bumbling buffoon is one of the things that the Guy Richie films got right when he cast Jude Law as the good doctor in his film adaptations. I'll never understand why the British film industry and even Hollywood went down that path, I guess they thought they needed a comic relief.
That is a handsome boxset, I love the emerald green slip cover. My wife gave me it on our first Christmas together. Thanks to the Granada series and Jeremy Brett I smoke Churchwarden and Calabash pipes, though I have yet to obtain a Persian slipper.
You may be a curmudgeon, but you do have a point. I was thinking the same thing as I was going through all the Sherlock Holmes stories. Watson, being a seasoned veteran, should have been more on the ball. But I realized that if Watson were, he could not have been the POV character telling the stories of the heroic Sherlock.
Oh well. Plot hole- take a drink...
