Has no one asked about the notch in the upper receiver where the latch engages?
With out a doubt, I'd ditch the stupid Spikes buffer. And I don't run any gun with anything other than a USGI spring.

Ok, for everyone watching.
I replaced the 2.5 year old Gunfighter CH with the a new Gunfighter CH and it looks like this will rectify my problem.
With the old CH when I lock the bolt to the rear and try and pull the CH out of "battery" with the old one, it came back pretty easily.
With the new CH, when I do the same thing I can't even get it to come out of "battery."
The latch looks so worn and rounded on the old one that I am attributing this to the latch.
I will however replace the buffer after I try out the H2, thanks Justin.
Interesting, do you think it was a bad latch? I have seen 100s of stock gi latch's last much longer than 2 years with much more use and stress. We shall see if mine shares the same fate?
The little ledge on the upper receiver that the CH latch engages can and does wear too.
Sometimes moreso due to a latch being harder than the receiver.
Every pull of the CH that doesn't completely unlock beyond the height of that ledge results in a little more wear that rounds off then eventually ramps the catch side of the ledge as its square face to square face interaction between the two parts as opposed to ramp to ramp when the CH is moving foreward.
Not saying that is or is not the current problem, just that it definitely can and has happened before.
If a latch wore out, something else was wearing too to get that wear on the latch. Its not a one sided system and once the receiver is worn to a certain point/shape, a CH won't stay locked foreward no matter how new its latch lever is.
Yes, thank you. I looked at the upper receiver and while it does look worn, it isn't quite a ramp yet. Also, with the new CH installed it seems to be rock solid.
Good point though.
Humor me when you get a couple minutes to kill.
Take the upper off the lower, then strip the bolt from the carrier and install the charging handle and carrier in the upper.
Hold the carrier in place fully forward then point the upper straight up with muzzle at the top.
Release the carrier.
If things are getting too bad, the carrier will knock the CH loose from the latch notch upon impact.
That means something must be done as it could also occur during firing
Might just be a soft push, might stuff it through your face. Nothing I'd want to bet on though.
Try it with you old handle first (based on your description it will likely fail) then try it with the replacement.
If the replacement pops the CH loose, do something about the upper ASAP regardless of a seemingly inocuous appearance.
