I own Colts and had an LMT complete rifle but sold it. I want another one cause they are great shooters but only sold to a friend who really wanted it.
I have a complete extra LMT lower and BCG so I plan on buying the upper now. As for issues on the MIM carrier key it does not seem to exist. I have not seen any documented proof of this item failing.
As for reading about failures with Colt, LMT or any other rifle you need to know we only get part of the story. Shooting these rifles with good magazines, quality ammo and properly lube helps but there are people who end up inducing failures on their own.
Hey it happens to the best of the quality rifles as it happened to me. Its a Colt 6920 with only 5K rounds through her. Colt did send me a new complete BCG for free.

I would definately get the LMT. I would take an LMT with optic(or ammo) over a colt without any day.
