Hey guys,
Thanks for all the advice. I finally settled on getting one of those BCM 16" uppers with 13" vtac rail. i got it in the mail today, and it seems like the perfect length. Only thing I need now is a quality optic.

Well you already made the choice. You will enjoy it as you bought quality products.
But for me, like a lot people here posted, I like the shortest rail possible for all the equipment I need. For me, I wish I got the 10" DD LITE rail, instead of the 12" on my BCM. Why? I honestly would not notice those few ounces, but 10" seems more correct in my mind, yes it works strangely.
Also know, you do not need a rail for a lot of things. Literally the midlength MOE handguards are half the weight of my DD rails. I, however, will need the ability that the DD rails give me. I plan on mounting a NV setup (PVS-14) when its needed, that means I'd have to move my Aimpoint M3 up-something you cannot do with MOE hanguards. If I can, however, find a way where I do not have to do that, without removing my BUIS, then I will not have the Aimpoint past the top of the upper receiver.
If you do not plan on putting a lot of things on rifle, then rails are not needed as you can mount things to the MOE.
