Is there any reason to buy a TRX Extreme (the older one with proprietary barrel nut) over a TRX Extreme Alpha?
Unless its significantly cheaper, no. From what I understand the biggest differences are the use of the stock barrel nut and a better/stronger attachment system. Both will take rail sections and squid grips.
Nope. You can get an Alpha Rail on Ebay for very cheap. A 15" will go for as little as $169.99 which is pretty darn good.
Having had both i would not go with the trx over the alpha, the mounting system is much better with the alpha.
I wouldn't trust buying any parts off of eBay too many knockoffs
Midwest industries has a nice looking rail that's almost the same and its a little lighter too.
Sent straight from my mind to this forum.
Owning both, I would definitely go for the alpha over the original as it has a much better mounting mechanism.
Get the Alpha. It's not like they're super expensive as it is. FWIW Troy usually has a black Friday/ pre-Chrsimas sale.
I was not impressed with the TRX "clamp" mounting design on a 9 inch mid-length build. It was just not solid and its a piston gun so you don't want the handguard touching the op rod. I added more and more until I was at the minimum opening at the clamp. 1/8th inch I think. I called Troy and WAS impressed how they handled it. They sent an email with a RMA sheet to print and put in the box with the rail. The next day, UPS was at my door looking for something the ship to Troy Industries. My request: repair or replace with an Alpha. (Had installed an Alpha on a recent build and was impressed) A new Alpha was shipped out to me.
The mount design on the Alpha is simple yet solid. Had to go back the standard barrel nut. Whacked it a little with a mallet to test and all was good to go.
