I have both. I prefer the Magpul. The Matech only has the small aperture as noted. For bench shooting or long range that is fine. I use mine for police work, and that will most likely be under 100 yards. Probably under 25 yards. So I prefer a larger rear aperture option. If I were shooting 300 yards + in Afghanistan, the Matech would have the advantage...
I have also seen rifles dropped in such a way that they snapped off a Matech rear...
If I had to buy one, Troy or A.R.M.S...
I swapped my MBUS for the KAC because the MBUS I had didn't hold a consistent zero.
I like the larger aperture of the MBUS better. Getting your eye closer a smaller aperture can work when you can take your time with the shot and your eyes are still young. Needing to get on target quick is another story. You won't have the luxury of making sure your eye is closer. I'd like to ream the aperture of the KAC to a larger diameter.
I am an advocate of iron sights, yes and I like having a sight I can change range quickly. But the stone cold reality is, if my Aimpoint fails in the middle of a fight while defending my home, I will simply use the front sight with the Aimpoint as the world's largest ghost ring. All the adjustments I have on the KAC won't help.
In case of the Aimpoint failing, he MBUS probably would have served well as a temporary back up sight until the Aimpoint could be repaired.
In the end, the choice is yours. If you like the MBUS, keep it. If you like the Matech, swap. I've never had a Matech, but it looks like it's got more things to go wrong with it than the MBUS or the Aimpoint
The only folding BUIS I run are Troy HK style and MBUS Gen II (+DD on one rifle)... My biggest gripe about the Troys is that the back sight comes configured with the big aperture as primary and it won't fold down when the smaller aperture is flipped up. I never use the big aperture on any sight, even at close distances - No need... Never had a Matech... They do look cool, but that drop test was pretty convincing. It's hard for me not to pick MBUS sights after reading that write-up. Since I'm primarly an irons guy (never a fan of red dot optics), I like quick deployment and durability since most of my guns run either back or both "back up" sights as primary.
Fixed: Daniel Defense... Awesome sights... Thinking of switching more of my guns to these. I just don't like all the white writing on them... Everyone needs to cut it out with the laser engraving and painting logos on your gun... I mean... It wears off and looks like crap. OK.. I'm ranting.. probably pissing off a lot of people too. :D
Stick with the MBUS... in my opinion... Looks like you could always buy a Matech for cheaper off of Fleabay anyway if you change your mind. They're flooded with them.
I'd trade for the Matech. I prefer Troys, but have used the Matech's and found it to be a decent sight of good quality.
That being said all my rifles have either the Troy folders, of Fixed.
I'm on my first magpul rear and the smaller aperture broke just from flipping it down, no abuse or anything. Not a huge deal but ill go Troy next for sure.
mbus for backup
Too much feedback from guys actually using matech in the mil about reliability issues. That with the magpul drop test i'm gonna stick with the magpul. Thanks for all the input guys!
What kind if shooting do YOU do? You need to decide what your needs are and allow that to dictate your decision. With that said, both sights are serviceable.
