I've got a magpul mbus rear sight that came with my rifle and I have an opportunity to trade for a matech buis. I know these are mil issued but have no experience with one. Was wondering if anyone could give me any insight on this. Thanks.

I trade in a heart beat.
Ok any reason why?
I just prefer the metal sights to plastic.
Solid locking metal rear sight with a clear sight picture and plenty of adjustment. Hands down go with the Matech. And if you want something really nice go with a kac rear sight.
I'd keep the MBUS.
For people who think magpul sights are not durable, this is an interesting read.
Interesting read on the drop test, thanks for that. How do you guys feel about the operation of these sights? I like the range adjustments on the matech but it only has a small aperture. Guess the magpul would be better for close range?
I'd trade for the Matech. I'm a fan of old school adjustable sights.
Get the Matech. It's a good sight, I prefer it much more than an MBUS.
...sent from my mind, using telepathy!
Added poll.
I own both, and I thought it was worth saying...
The Matech also allows for much better peripheral vision. The sight itself is very narrow, which is nice.
You probably know this, but the Matech is also adjustable for shooting to 600 yards.
The only thing I prefer about the MBUS is the option of a larger aperture (not that I've ever actually used it). Like the poster above said, if you are shooting in low light, get your eye close and it should be fine.
Leave the mbus for the 15/22 IMHO...
I've had 2 of the Magtec ones broke off, one the sight was mounted and in a soft case when I removed gun from case the rail interface part was broke off. and other ones disasemble in use. One I replaced the rail mount part with a after market part.. one is in a junk box.
IMHO: use the one you got and replace if needed.
I've had both and while I don't like either, and I'm somewhat averse to anything Magpul other than mags and followers, I voted to keep the Mbus.
The adjustable elevation on the Matech is useless and can get your sight knocked out of adjustment, the windage wheel is too big and gets on my nerves when charging the gun with two fingers, it sits too high off the receiver, the blade doesn't lay down flat on the receiver, the mounting screw and rail piece are rather flimsy and easily overtightened, the little nub of metal that keeps the rear sight down will eventually wear and let the sight flip up on recoil.
It does offer a good sight picture and is easy to adjust the windage when zeroing.
The Mbus are rather ugly and I'd never own one, but I think they're less annoying than the Matech.
While i like the idea of range adjustments on the matech the feedback about the reliability is disconcerting. That with the link about the drop test makes me lean towards the magpul but the poll is leaning towards the matech. Can anyone make an argument for the matech other than you just like it better? I.e. why?
I currently own both but I prefer the MBUS. Just seems more flexible to me....
I have both. I prefer the Magpul. The Matech only has the small aperture as noted. For bench shooting or long range that is fine. I use mine for police work, and that will most likely be under 100 yards. Probably under 25 yards. So I prefer a larger rear aperture option. If I were shooting 300 yards + in Afghanistan, the Matech would have the advantage...
I have also seen rifles dropped in such a way that they snapped off a Matech rear...
If I had to buy one, Troy or A.R.M.S...
I swapped my MBUS for the KAC because the MBUS I had didn't hold a consistent zero.
I like the larger aperture of the MBUS better. Getting your eye closer a smaller aperture can work when you can take your time with the shot and your eyes are still young. Needing to get on target quick is another story. You won't have the luxury of making sure your eye is closer. I'd like to ream the aperture of the KAC to a larger diameter.
I am an advocate of iron sights, yes and I like having a sight I can change range quickly. But the stone cold reality is, if my Aimpoint fails in the middle of a fight while defending my home, I will simply use the front sight with the Aimpoint as the world's largest ghost ring. All the adjustments I have on the KAC won't help.
In case of the Aimpoint failing, he MBUS probably would have served well as a temporary back up sight until the Aimpoint could be repaired.
In the end, the choice is yours. If you like the MBUS, keep it. If you like the Matech, swap. I've never had a Matech, but it looks like it's got more things to go wrong with it than the MBUS or the Aimpoint
The only folding BUIS I run are Troy HK style and MBUS Gen II (+DD on one rifle)... My biggest gripe about the Troys is that the back sight comes configured with the big aperture as primary and it won't fold down when the smaller aperture is flipped up. I never use the big aperture on any sight, even at close distances - No need... Never had a Matech... They do look cool, but that drop test was pretty convincing. It's hard for me not to pick MBUS sights after reading that write-up. Since I'm primarly an irons guy (never a fan of red dot optics), I like quick deployment and durability since most of my guns run either back or both "back up" sights as primary.
Fixed: Daniel Defense... Awesome sights... Thinking of switching more of my guns to these. I just don't like all the white writing on them... Everyone needs to cut it out with the laser engraving and painting logos on your gun... I mean... It wears off and looks like crap. OK.. I'm ranting.. probably pissing off a lot of people too. :D
Stick with the MBUS... in my opinion... Looks like you could always buy a Matech for cheaper off of Fleabay anyway if you change your mind. They're flooded with them.
I'd trade for the Matech. I prefer Troys, but have used the Matech's and found it to be a decent sight of good quality.
That being said all my rifles have either the Troy folders, of Fixed.
I'm on my first magpul rear and the smaller aperture broke just from flipping it down, no abuse or anything. Not a huge deal but ill go Troy next for sure.
mbus for backup
Too much feedback from guys actually using matech in the mil about reliability issues. That with the magpul drop test i'm gonna stick with the magpul. Thanks for all the input guys!
What kind if shooting do YOU do? You need to decide what your needs are and allow that to dictate your decision. With that said, both sights are serviceable.
Where did you buy it from? I wouldn't be surprised if it's a counterfeit. There are so many almost perfect counterfeits floating around out there... Can't go wrong with Troy though...
Exactly... MBUS are better for CQB situations/urban warfare and I imagine the Matech would be better on an open battlefield.
You'll be fine. Enjoy them until Magpul comes out with the Gen 3. There's a reason why I run $90 a pair sights on $2000+ rifles. I don't like to cheese out anywhere and I don't consider buying the MBUS as being thrifty - they do what I need them to do and they do it well.
