I was under the impression the barrel blocks or what have you are suppose to be used. I, however, have seen it mostly done with Action Blocks. It works.

After reading this I will buy a geissele reaction rod, tq wrench, crows foot, and install my own flash hider. I just have a table vice, but that should certainly be stout enough to grab the flats of the reaction rod under the immense strain of a whopping 20-30# tq required, I'd think.
I was just swapping out upper receivers. I have a Seekins SAR rail. Took the barrel nut off and slid it down a bit, realized I needed another shim behind the nut so I went to take the A2 off to get another shim behind the nut. Too much torque removing the nut for the upper to handle.
I've removed muzzle devices with no issues before using vise blocks on the upper, as long as the barrel nut was on, just a stupid mistake.
Would this work as a .22 conversion upper? A barrel still slides into the receiver and a barrel nut still threads on...
As said by "SpankMonkey" Now you have a reason for a dedicated 22LR upper. Looks like a good time to order a 22LR barrel. I use vice and blocks on the barrels only, I have chewed up a barrel a time or two.
Surefire lists a value on the upper end of 30, I believe. I need to remove the flash hider Daniel Defense installs, and install a 7.62 Socom mount. Is Barry Dueck's method illustrated by surefire officially, using a block pinned in the upper okay, or is a barrel block or reaction rod totally necessary? Upper is a factory dd 10.3".
Between this and the bent barrel thread, I'd say we've got some real squared away AR smiths on this board.
