Yeah it pushes the rifle down into the support hand to help maintain rifle control in addition to mitigating muzzle rise. There's a lot sciency stuff and physics that I won't bore you with.

Back to topic, OP, please do let us know of you had any buffer/spring trouble and if you switched it out.

You might need to go to a H-2 buffer. My midlength funtioned fine EXCEPT for it would not lock back the bolt on the last round. (using 5.56 XM193)
In my case, a Spikes T-2 solved my problem nicely.
