You do indeed. Switch from IMR type powder to Winchester ball which increased powder residue. Deleting the chrome lined bore & chamber which allowed corrosion to form between the brass and chamber. Issuing the rifles without cleaning gear because it was supposed to be self-cleaning. On top of it all, the rifle was issued without field trials to test the changes. (Colt had to know about the changes, especially the barrel specs. McNamara's Whiz Kids did over-rule the Army to have the changes made.)
Folks bag on the AR because it did so poorly in 'Nam when it was released for general issue. But prior to the changes being made, the rifle was tested heavily in the jungles of South East Asia and did very well
