Need help choosing which length upper to sbr to compliment my 20 inch m16a4 type ar
I've got a 20 inch m16a4 type rifle with a bipod and Nikon scope with a a2 stock and I'm looking to build a cqb/primary type rifle with my other complete lower. I just can't decide on if I want a factory Daniel defense 10.3 barrel with a mk18 ris II rail or a factory 14.5 Daniel defense barrel with the m4 ris II rail. Either way I'm sbring the lower and looking for which you all think would best compliment my 20 inch and your reasons why. Do you find that your 10.3 dd ar's are just as reliable? Thank you all for the help in advance.

Where is your proof that 10.5" ARs with proper gas ports "run at the bare ragged edge of working for reliability?" As far as I'm concerned, 14.5" middys "run at the bare ragged edge of working" in my experience. They have given me far more problems than my 10.5".
You say I'm a sample size of one that hasn't tested all variables. Fair enough. Where are your tests that prove your assertions? And what about all the mk18s issued to Navy and Marines? If they were on the bare ragged edge of working, I think they would have found that edge by now, surpassed it, and discarded the system as unreliable.

That's the only reason I'd consider an 11.5" lol.
Noveske, Centurion, DD, and Colt also make 10.5" barrels. I don't think one or the other is any more common to be honest. If anything, 10.3/5" is more common because of being a mil length.

And the concenses I'm getting is that it's pointless to sbr an 14.5 and people who own 11.5 barrels think it's elite over the 10.5 or 12.5 because it has more velocity than 10.5 and is more compact than 12.5. With that said I am thinking I'm going to go with a 10.3/5 over the 14.5 because after hearing people's thoughts about sbring a 14.5 and it being a waste, I'm starting to agree.
I think a pinned 14.5" with a short can is a great upper that only requires one stamp.

Just file your paperwork yearly and you're GTG.
It's not hard at all.

Most people I know file yearly for every conceivable state they might visit. Forms come back in about 2 weeks.
Wash, rinse, repeat yearly. Yes it's a paperwork drill ONCE a year...

Why not a 14.5" for even more dwell time and velocity? Will you notice two extra inches over a 12.5? I really don't think so.

That being said I've shot 7.5" and it was a blast, figuratively and literally! But it's pretty dang dirty, the higher heat also made cleaning it a pain, atleast the owner said, it baked on carbon, and burnt up lube, bad. It had a massive fireball. It was fun, but he could also only shoot 5.56 pressures.
I went for what I thought was the best SBR for reliability, velocity, size and keeping the S in SBR . The Dwell time almost doubles from 10.5" to 11.5" (to repeat that fact), and I shoot cheap steel cased ammo, so I'll take the extra safety margin for 1 or 2 inches of barrel.
As a side note, how many guys with 10.5" are shooting .223 ammo through it? How many .223 steel cased?
All of the advice I've given, I've taken. I've bought a 16" Midlength and a 12" SBR.
So why is 11.5 viewed as elitist? I was thinking it was just a barrel length all this time, and these were guns meant for shooting. So in your opinion it's either 10.5 or 14.5?
ETA: Guys with both 10.5 and 11.5-12.5 do you notice them needing more lube? Or do you notice them being harder to clean? Or more concussion with an A2?
I shoot steel cased .223 wolf all the time with h3 out of my 10.5", not sure if anyone else does. It also works with 75gr SMKs and 5.56 of various weight.
