For a first can, is it a wise decision to make a purchase if a can you can use on multiple calibers? I have a DD MK18 (due in August), a DD M4V5 and a Remington 700 AAC-SD in .308. Would I be sacrificing much performance on my 5.56 guns for the flexibility offered by a .30 caliber suppressor?

I was in the same situation you were in not too long ago. I went with the new surefire 762 mini can. It covers all the rifles I own and some I plan to build in the future. I may however down the road decide to get a dedicated 556 mini from surefire just because. No hands on experience yet, it's still in ATF prison. :(

Really, the biggest "loss" in using a 7.62 or 45 suppressor on smaller caliber hosts is size and weight, suppression loss is at most negligible, well at least to people who don't make a living busting down doors with rifles at the ready.
I have a 7.62-SDN6 and Tirant45 - very happy with suppression of 7.62x51, 5.56x45, 45ACP, and 9MM.

Get the 7.62. I can't hear a difference. And I was holding a 762 SDN a few months back and didn't even notice it wasn't the M4-2000.

I have the same combo as RHINEWSO(762SDN-6 and TiRant 45).
If you do a dang search, you will find this topic beat to death.
I believe in testing the SDN-6 was 4db louder when shooting 5.56 than the M4-2000 was, however when shooting .30 through the SDN-6 there was no comparison. The SDN-6 is about 1" longer than the M4-2000, but really not to much heavier.
When I was making my decision on cans my dealer had an early SDN-6 and he said "this is the beginning of the end to dedicated 5.56 cans". I tend to agree. I dont think he has sold an M4-2000 since. When you get damn near(none of US can tell the difference) the same performance when shooting sub calibers through the can, why NOT have a can that can do multiple things. There are now multiple .30 cans on the market that have mounting systems designed for sub calibers. When the SDN-6 was introduced(and even up until last year) there really were not any other .30 cans that had 5.56 mounts.

I am facing the same questions and the above discussion has definitely swayed me toward the 7.62 direction. In regards to the AAC models, would it be a similar story for the comparison of the Mini7 vs. Mini4 as it is for the 762-SDN-6 vs. M4-2000? I was considering the Mini4 but the Mini7 would add more flexibility given they both would not be safe without hearing protection.
-
As much as I'd love to add a Mini7 to the mix, I think it's still vaporware at this point.
As a first can, I'd go the "one size fits all route". When you start getting more cans, then you can get dedicated cans per caliber. It's highly addictive...lol.

Go with lager caliber suppressor. One of the reasons I haven't gone for 300 upper is the fact that's would need to by a new can. As curious as I am about the 300, it simply isn't enough to justify another grand for the can.

OK so now begs the question as to which 30 cal can? Without getting in a branddebate, or even a model debate, would I be sacrificing the benefit of an SBR by getting a longer can?

i was looking heavily into either the aac sdn6 or the new surefire 762 mini so i can only speak on them. all decibal ratings aside, i opted for the new surefire due to the new mounting system, and the fact that everyone advises to spare no expense because you basically married to the can for life. im planning on running it on a bcm 11.5 sbr and from what ive seen it the new surefire doesnt add that much to the overall length. ill let you know in a couple months how it works out for me....
