My Noveske LW barrel is very nice....it feels more balanced than my DD did
I like it Wes.
Though I will always just stick with the LW barrel. I really do not Govt'Profile or the M4 barrel.
I also like the N4 barrel, and the SOCOM.
Based on your point(s), why then are you not using medium or bull barrel contours?
The weight at the end of a government barrel (due to the step up in barrel diameter right before the gas block) is good and bad, but mostly bad. It adds more overall deflection to the barrel by putting the most weight all the way at the end, and it puts the thinnest part of the barrel at its hottest point (approximately 1" before the gas block), but it does provide dampening for barrel vibrations (it does not increase them; see: suppressors). The former 2 have a much greater impact than the latter, though.
Honestly, from a structural perspective, it's an absolutely retarded design, exactly the opposite of what it should be. In order to minimize deflection and create the strongest possible barrel, it should run thicker to thinner, not this weird thinner to thicker design going now. Ideally, it would run at a constant taper from start to finish, but with that being out of the question due to gas block design, something like 0.7" under the handguard running to 0.65" beyond the gas block would be great. Saves weight compared to a bull barrel and provides a stronger barrel profile than currently used.
Why was the current profile even developed? I understand to save weight, but that could have been done with much better designs with equivalent machining time. Was it for the relief cut for external attachments?
Two words; grenade launcher.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
I like this one:

Indeed... in fact, we even call the notch a "two oh three shelf" or "two oh three cut."
It's not for barrel harmonics. Barrel harmonics are a real thing, but in a CMV 14.5" barrel? Not sure you'd be able to make the argument that it'll have any measurable effect on ballistics with 5.56 coming out of a short, chrome-lined barrel.
Weight is a legitimate concern, and so is appearance, if you're into that.
Who re-profiled your barrel Wes?
Just so it's out there; if someone's being heavy handed when cutting down the profile on the lathe he may add undue stress to the barrel making it shoot worse than before.
