That one has been a regular re-list for quite some time, as I recall.
Honestly cannot even begin to imagine what drove the offending smith to do that ("fish scales?") to the gun, unless perhaps it was heavily-damaged and this was just an attempt to work around the problem. Even so, a re-weld and re-cut would have been infinitely-preferable. This particular example is utterly-garish. I suspect someone considered it high-art, too ... that's the real head-scratcher.
There are definitely some ugly, botch-job 1911s out there, though. Pretty much any listing that includes the word "custom" along with a name that you've never heard of causes me to hear the not-so-distance whistle of an impending train wreck. Half of them seem to be home garage conversions that probably used to be really nice guns.
Little wonder that unmolested pre-series 70s and such are beginning to command well over the usual $800-900 base gun prices that were once the norm. Was watching them last week, and $1,200 seems to be as low as anyone is ever going to find one now.
Here ... this should help you forget all about what you just saw: http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889104@N02/9705382757/

Much better, no?

I too have seen that one floating around the interwebs. Just sickening.
There was a original unmolosted Colt series 70 posted for sale on this forum not too long ago that went for 750 bucks. If I had had the extra cash on hand I would have bought it, someone here got a good deal. I have two reproduction colt series 70's that I patiently waiting for MARS to start excepting work again..
ETA: Found the original sales thread. Even has the preferred "G" in the serial number.

penalty... DEATH
Yikes!!! Thanks AC for the 'cleansing photo'................:D
What the hell am I looking at ?
Did a grinder/dremel shark robot combo creature swallow a WW2 GI and poop this poor thing out?
It's like looking at really bad boob job.
That 1911 is the Nancy Pelosi of 1911's.
AC on the other hand the 1911 you linked is drop dead pretty.
WTF.
Looks like the serrations were chewed on it by Shrek. And is that an attempt to make the dust cover resemble a BHP???
I would find the guy that butchered that Colt, and beat him like a rented mule. After I was done, some ancient Stasi colonel would mutter "Damn, Serious, he's had enough, let him up......"
Now I have a bit of throw up in my mouth
Now he states that the pistol is C&R eligible, I thought once something was taken out of its military issued configuration its C&R status is voided?
If you are going to butcher it like that, at least put a better set of sights on it while you got the damn Dremel out!
So sad. The story I put to that is some moron probably got a hold if his granddad's footlocker. Probably cleaning out the grandparent's house after a funeral. The dipwad probably was online looking at all the ways to modify a 1911 and decided to get to work.
I'm with SeriousStudent, the offender should be beaten like a rented mule. Only after he recovers he should be beaten again.
Horrible fate that 1911 suffered. To make it through war and get home, it ends up like that
I guess I still struggle to envision the thought process of the guy who actually did the work. He must have felt that what he was doing was somehow improving the gun, though I can't for the life of me see how you can look at it and conclude any such thing. Then again, I've seen some pretty bad tattoos in my life, too. Not everyone has an eye for what works and what, clearly, does not.
AC
DAMN that was some hot ammo! The front end melted!!!
I'd be willing to bet the smith who did the work is quite proud of it too...
I appreciate the 1911 but I'm not a 1911-guy....
But the sight of that pistol make me sad... :(
I'm with some others thinking that someone decided to do a DIY job on that slide. If someone paid a trained gunsmith to do that.... Well you know what they say about a fool and his money.

WTF over??? A piece of American history, "GONE, just GONE". One can only assume that the original owner had no idea that the had.
Hmmmm, that's.... ummm.... interesting.:fie:
The Creature of the Black1911 Lagoon.
I do not think multi-system failure even comes close to this. If bubba wanted to experiment with his dremel tool on a 1911 slide, sarco typically has cheap armscor slides available. This knuckle head had to go ahead and ruin a piece of history. It couldn't have been cheap or easy to acquire that gun, unless it was gifted or they inherited it.
The thread about the lady being beheaded does not bother me as much as this.
What a waste of good iron.
Yuck.
I can only hope the original serrations were so damaged they had no choice to destroy this piece of history.
Someone should buy it and destroy it.
I saw this and got a headache at the same time I got bubble gut
I have always wanted a WW2 1911, IDK if CMP still has them, but obviously there is one less now
Put a $300 .22 conversion on it then it would be worth $200
They did all that shit to " combatize" the gun...and left the old stock sights on. I hope they choke on the thing.
My eyes! Oh my God my eyes are burning! Someone make it stop!
Merely proof that there is no limit to the things people can think of to do to a gun;
as well as no shortage of unthinking people to do it.
Or as my father would say " Hard evidence that horses asses outnumber horses".
"Keep it classy San Diego..."
I've seen a lot of bizarre things but the individual who did this should be kicked in the testicles, repeatedly
Wow...that is simply horrendous.
Remember...people also nickel plated their bring back Lugers.
Turning what should be 800-1500 dollar collectibles into 200 dollar shooters...maybe.
Stupidity...no doubt about it.
This is equally as dumb as those that put 3000 dollar wheels on an old Chevy Impala that is worth maybe 2000 bucks.

Funny you should mention the Lugers people liked to customize. I looked at one two yers ago that was nickel plated and then allowed to rust. The barrel looked like it was nickeled inside the bore ans had severe pitting. When I saw that I handed it back to the guy and he acted like I wasted his time. Ridiculous. He ruined a perfectly good pistol through ignorance and neglect.
I can see tightening up the slide, barrel bushing even a trigger and sights to improve it as a shooter but that 1911 was bastardized. When I was a kid the surplus 1911 were dirt cheap back then who cared you could go out and buy another one..
Yes, the exterior has been butchered to the point of ridiculousness. What's even more disconcerting is what was possibly done internally. "Internally it has had a trigger job and has about the lightest trigger pull I have ever seen on a gun." That right there should tell anyone interested to run away and never look back. What's done is done. I hope this..... "thing" is never bought by anyone for eternity and is buried with it's present owner when the time comes. :cray:
This just hurts to look at. Hurts.
Seems like a fish scale mod that got all fudged up,
That fella should have his ass removed!
I'm afraid to ask, but what did I miss?
