It's not exactly ideal but currently iron sights for daytime and PAQ-4C for night. I am torn between the TA33 and a 1-4x/6x variable when I add an optic. I've used both and liked the light weight and simplicity of the TA33, but a quality variable has it's advantages as well. I recognize the durability and utility of aimpoints but feel that some magnification adds a lot of versatility.
Replaced my TA33 with the 1-6x vortex which I think is superior in every way except for weight (much heavier), and possibly durability. I'm not going to torture test a $1400 dollar scope myself but ACOGs have a stellar reputation for durability. But both those optics resided on a rifle that is not my first choice for SHTF.
EDITED TO REDUCE MODERATOR DISCOMFORT: I'll use what I think I need to protect my family.
Everyone has a right to self-protection whether the threat is coming from seven yards or seven hundred yards. There are ways to deter a potential threat using your rifle that do not include a lethal shot.
BACK TO SUBJECT
Which rifles to choose and which optics for SHTF an be a tough call. I have trouble deciding and have switched rifles and optics more than once. I picked two rifles that are fitted with high quality parts and are broken in well. Currently, I like ARs that use standard AR parts, and can fulfill multiple uses as best as possible. I also keep a spare bolt, lube, and a field repair kit with them.
Optics, I try to use multi purpose optics, as I mentioned earlier a T-1 with Aimpoint Magnifer (I don't like magnifiers, but I keep one handy) and an Accupoint TR24. And I use Troy BUIS.
I've recently thought about going all 1-4X optics and maybe put a NF 1-4X on one, and keep the TR24 on the other. I like the idea of still having an etched reticle should the battery die.
But as always with variables there are more parts to break. Arrrgh.
I actually prefer the SCAR platform, but I've never been able to get my arms around the spare parts on those rifles. I'm still working on that.
Read my above post. This isn't being politically correct. But I can tell you this, you point a gun at most people or their family, then you're getting shot...not "id'ed". You escalated the situation and became the threat.
But by the responses of a couple of you people here, I hope I never see a comment about somebody getting muzzle-swept in training again as it has become completely accepted here to point loaded firearms at people just simply to figure out who they are.
Until then, I'm done with this thread. Cya.
Well Mr. thebuckeye, Did you gain any truly helpful data that has aided you in making the appropriate choice of optic for your SHTF weapon? Hopefully you've realized that asking a forum to tell you what they have and why they have it ends up with mostly the whats and rarely the whys. After 200+ posts are you truly any closer to a decision than when you posted your initial request? Did you notice Side A going to war against Side B and the "Arfcom" lights flashing and the alarms going off? Did you notice the thread slowly going off the rails and a Moderator having to step in and gently nudge the topic back onto the tracks and still be ignored?
Sometimes it's a lot better to do a search on your own and formulate your own opinion, make a decision, act on it, and if it works out great. If not, move on to plan B. If that works out, you've gained knowledge. You're on your way in becoming your own subject matter expert. Now that's an accomplishment. You probably would have been better off printing a photo of a RDS, a magnified optic, and a BUIS. Then go to your local zoo and toss each one into the monkey cage and wait ten minutes. The photo that garnered the attention of the most monkeys is the way to go! LOL
My SHTF rifle is a Colt LE6920 with a NF 1-4x24 and BUIS.
Unfortunately, it seems that in any thread that goes beyond 5 pages, the majority of comments at page 6 and on are simply folks arguing about whatever they have decided to argue about.
Guess I'll shut this down to see how to proceed. If there is enough interest to revive it, I'll edit it down to the actual discussion and open it back up.
If not, it will merrily fall into memory along with all of the other south-bound threads.
Ugh.
Sometimes the internet is annoying.
