Tell me why you chose what you did on your SHTF rifle. Re-evaluating my choice and would like to hear the whys to your decision.
I have an ACOG TA11 on my Noveske, but my CQB gun is a Beretta CX4 Storm 9mm with an Aimpoint H-1.
EOTech 552. It's not a "Sniper Rifle" and I can't see more than 300m in any direction where I live. Double A batteries are available anywhere and can be pilfered from every X-Box controller in your house. Nothing is faster. It spent over two years on my M4 in Iraq, it's good enough for here, and in my opinion, good luck.
I will be adding a magnifier with a FTS mount, though.
My go to shtf rifle has iron sights.
I use an eotech xps 2.0. But I rather use iron sights. I leave the eotech on because the wife and son knows how to use the eotech.
Every rifle I own, except for my 10/22, has BUIS (or an offset RMR, in the case of my LMT MWS).
Red dot on 12.5 AR SBR, and on SBR Draco. If Obama releases the zombie hordes, and can only take one rifle, I'm going to have a hard time deciding which one to take. Lets hope it doesn't come to this..
One SHTF rifle has a 1-4 variable optic that can be used illum/unillum and has MBUS. MBUS are rugged and Leupold's ruggedness speak itself. The other has an Aimpoint PRO and MBUS, couple of batts in the pistol grip and its good for a few years.
Mine has and Aimpoint with BUIS. I have a magnifier on a LaRue QD mount if needed.
My personal grab in case of bombs going down, tits going up, and shit going sideways rifle has a Trijicon TA01NSN ACOG with troy BUIS under it and fixed front sight post. Don't plan on running CQB much where I am at and there are a lot of places where I can see a long ways. As far as close in with it, I may not be able to pick which eye I put the bullet in at speed, but I can pick which region of the body so that is good enough for me. Also a factor is my eyesight is not perfect and I get a little bit of staring with the Aimpoint I own but with the Acog everything is crisp and that makes me happy and accurate. In fact on another rifle build I am working on, the one that Aimpoint currently resides, I am seriously considering dumping the Aimpoint and just running irons.
Mine has an aimpoint H1 with mbus.
There is two particular rifles I built with SHTF in mind. I'd have a very hard time figuring out which one I'd grab first.
One has an AimPoint with BUIS and 4 extra batteries in the stock. This gives me roughly 20+ years of battery life. No need to go pillaging XBox controllers for AA batteries... Sorry Eotech fans :-)
The other rifle is a 1x6 SWFA SS that doesn't need any batteries to work. There's no doubt the 1x6 is more versatile.

Aimpoint t-1. After seeing Larry vickers blow one up , destroy the mount and it still worked fine, I'm a believer. Back up irons of course.
ACOG TA33 is about the most balanced optic I've found...ironically...close the front lens cover and look at the target vs the optic...acts like a red dot...kind of like an aimpoint...thanks to its eye relief
Leupold Mk4 1.5-5 with illuminated CMR2 reticle.
Two rifles. Both have an Eotech EXPS 3-0 with Gen 2 MBUS. Extra lithium batteries in the stock, and an Aimpoint 3x magnifier in a Larue QD FTS mount to swap between them.
Vortex 1-4. SHTF where I am would require hunting...I don't want to taint my meat with a gut shot at 200yd.

Aimpoint M68. Spare battery compartment on mount and optic. I figure in good for ~10 years. After that, I'll stick with my buis

I only have one rifle and it has an Eotech on it.
Aimpoint T-1 and BUIS
I like a low power variable optic with an etched reticle and offset BUIS for maximum flexibility. That configuration will migrate over to my 7.62 platform, while I retain a holographic or dot sight on another carbine (also equipped with quality BUIS of course).
1-4X illuminated with BUIS.
Depends which rifle I feel like grabbing :)
My ak has xs big dot iron sights and the ar has aimpoint pro w the 3x magnifier. If I really need to reach out then my r700 has 4-16x grand slam
It depends on where you live. If your in the city, RDS. If your in the boonies, 1-4 or 1-6 optic. Your location is the only thing that determines what is needed. IMO you put soldiers in the mountains or desert with no urban environment at all, so you think they will want a RDS or a scope?
Just like if your typically in cqb situations, there really isn't need for a scope. Now if you live in a town in the boonies, **** it, run both :)
Again, it's about the location and circumstances. I keep a scope for hunting small animals, but when the rifle is at home in the suburbs, it wears a red dot.
Right now it has an AimPoint T-1.
It will soon have the VCOG or Leupold MK 1-6.
I have become a believer in variable power scopes.
My SBR primary with 12.5 upper has an Aimpoint T1, the 11.5 upper has an ACOG TA01. Another carbine has a T1 as well and the other two have irons only.
10.5 SBR has a 2MOA T1 with flip magnifier and flip buis. That'd probably be my SHTF gun if I had to bug out due to the weight, durability, and reliability.
I've sold all my optics, except my pvs 14, and my AK is back to stock configuration. I been running irons only for about 8 months. I might just grab another ta33 and call it a day.
I'm in the boonies--one rifle is a 16" AR 5.56 with an EOTech 512 & co-witness irons. As noted the larger size is worth it as AA batteries are easier to find vs. N or 123s.
The other is a 20" AR 5.56 with a ACOG TA11 "Donut" & back-up irons. I'm amazed at the simplicity of the ACOG & its BDC which allows tagging targets out to 300yrds without trouble.
Currently a T1 on GDI qd mount...but that may soon change to an EXPS3-0TAN....we'll see which one I wind up liking better :)
Red - Lucid HD7
Multiple reticle, uses common easily-changed battery, lower 1/3 co-witness for BUIS, fit my budget at the time.
One rifle has an Eotech Exps-3 with co-witness Magpul BUIS. The other has a Leupold 2-7 x28 ultralight scope. I live in the middle of nowhere and have use for both.
Same here, except my spare battery is in my BCM grip. Magnified doesn't do much for me; I'm left eye dominant, so for anything with magnification I need to close my left eye. That makes me slower and makes me more "tunnel visiony". The only thing I might change with my setup is to get a LaRue QD mount for my M68 (it sits in the standard mil mount), that way I can remove it without having to verify zero everytime. Oh and a Magpul BUIS too...
1 rifle with 2 uppers.
10.3" upper runs an Aimpoint T1 in a LaRue 660 mount.
6920 upper runs a NF 1-4X24.
Both uppers have BUIS. 6920 upper runs with a FSB and KAC BUIS rear.
Both optics run on the same CR2032 battery. Optics are interchangeable on both uppers. CR2032 batteries are easy to find and relatively cheap. They're easy to store and light weight enough to pack many away. Battery life is crazy long for the T1 and the NF battery was just changed the fire of January. The original battery was still going strong after 2 years of use.
TR24 for my grab 'n go 6920. But for SHTF I'll be moving in with my nearby sibs and supplying the family platoon with various AR/AK options.
