Aimpoint PRO vs. T1/H1/R1, or ACOG for a SHTF optic?

I came to the realization that an aimpoint t1 is better for me, even with astigmatism. You can carry many years of battery, and it Mr. Murphy comes to call, it acts as a huge ghost ring with practice.

An acog is a great plan, with training can be a cqb/longer range(not long range) choice.

Variable optics come with their own set of variables(pun intended).

For me I would use a variable 1x4/1x6 AND a red dot. Of course, depends on how long of a SHTF scenario. Long term, variable/acog, short term, red dot. Isn't there a battery power, tritium, fibre optic from trijicon? That might be my answer.

Not trying to get into a contest here... but I have owned an ACOG which was relatively new (new old stock, probably made 3-5 years before I bought it), and wasn't real impressed with the tritium brightness even at that point. The fiber optic light level was OK, but not great. From what little I understand, which might be wrong, despite the decay of tritium being as you describe it, the perceived brightness of the illumination doesn't precisely follow the radioactive decay, and I've read that they are essentially completely dark after 20 years or less. Maybe someone who's owned one very long term can chime in. The thread below suggests that they're getting dim at 15 years:

I use and like the aimpoint. as does everybody's friend LV.

If you have to ask - the Aimpoint H-1 is probably the best answer. The T-1 works with NV and is proofed for deeper immersion - but the H-1 is cheaper by the cost of a good mount.

Then spend time working on skills with the pistol, stash things like water, ammunition, and antibiotics. If your primary goal is SHTF preparedness, those latter three items are the most important, and then comes using a pistol, because that's the weapon you're most likely to use anyway.

With the touted repeatable zero capability of quality QD mounts, wouldn't having two optics be an option? Ideally my SHTF setup would have 3 rifles each with it's own optic. M4s, 1-4, and a 2.5-10 carried by my boys and I. If I had to limit myself to one rifle, it'd have the RDS on it with a 2.5-10 in my bag to put on if need to go hunting, or just heading out to open terrain. Could confirm zero in a few rounds, make adjustments if needed rather quickly.

I have no input on the ACOG but of the two, T1 and PRO, the T1 wins the weight/size contest and the PRO wins for value/price. some people make a distinction based on diameter but I haven't found that to be an issue for me. assuming they are both 2MOA, the T1 wins if considering a magnifier simply due to it's smaller footprint...

It's a bit heavy but I like the Aimpoint Comp M4 that uses standard size AA batteries. One can buy the newer lithium AA's to stock up their supply. And since they are rated at 8 years of continuous on battery life with the alkalines I imagine the lithiums would at least make it that long and be less likely to leak and ruin your electronics. Just my take.

In the past I've had T-1s and a PRO on my personal rifles and a department issued TA31 on my patrol rifle. I was injured on the job a couple years back and took a medical retirement so the ACOG is out of the picture and the half life always gnawed at the back of my brain to boot. A few years back I got on a big kick of wanting a red dot with the most battery life possible for my personal ARs. The CompM4 won. Yeah, it's big, but I prefer the larger FOV than that of the Aimpoint micros and the damn thing stays on all the time.

For me you can't go wrong with any model Aimpoint, it's just subjective as to which model works best for your needs.

Both my ARs have ACOGs with BUIS and my CX4 Storm has an Aimpoint H-1 co-witnessed. I am very satisfied with these setups, but I also train with pistols. I believe that handgun proficiency would come in very handy in such a scenario.

I prefer the CompM4 as well.
