I am sure you have seen the DD torture test on youtube. I personally went with the DDm4v7 because at the end of the day you don't need all of that rail. You will end up (maybe) buying rail covers which costs more money.
Of the 2 I would say if resale is a potential thought the Colt is a household name, would be easier to sell later. If this isn't going anywhere and will be in the family as long as you are a live...Daniel Defense hands down. Either one will out last any of us probably.
I had a 6940, I never put a high round count through it, ~2000 rounds, but it never hiccupped. I sold because I didn't feel that it had the same flexibility as some of my other rifles. The more classes I attend, the more my shooting style evolves and I didn't feel that the 6940 coupled well with the way I shoot today. Still an excellent rifle if it meets your needs, but I would vote DD.
I loved my 1st V5 so much that i just picked one of these up @ buds for my brother.
I have handled a V4 but prefer the longer rail of the V5. Also I havw shot the 6940 on several occasions. It is a great rifle but I do not like the front site on it also I prefer a longer rail. As others have stated with the 6940 you are pretty much stuck with the rail on it where as the DD can be changed out. I know you think you may not want to change rail but ir is nice to know you can if you want.
These are just my personal preferences either rifle you go with will be great just comes down to personal preference.
I've had the 6940 for a good while now and love it! I don't add too many things to the rail so it meets my needs well, but if you want flexability in rails and such I would get the DD or a 6920 and add your own rail.
Being I also shoot what I collect (no safe queens here) and buy and/or build to keep. I don't trade or sell. I've been looking at getting the DD MK 12 and eventually the DD M4 V-9 S2W. I like the features of both. No argument,DD does put out a very fine MSR and I have also had my eye on the V-4 with the shorter rail.
As for the rail on the 6940,that doesn't bother me not being able to change it out. I went for the free float and fold down sights so I could add the EOTech (with out QA mounts) so it's closer to the rail. My 6920 has a scope and the front sight doesn't interfere with the optics. Did the same with my (old 1-8) Sport and the 15T.
Being the topic is DD & 6940,I won't go into my other MSR's. I will say,I go for function and I don't "Barbie Doll" my MSR's to death with the "tactica-cool" look. I've seen some MSR's that could use a set of wheels to just get them from the car/truck to the shooting bench...
I also like keeping my local "Mom & Pop" shops open and it's MUCH easier if I have any problems (very rare). And they do give me good deals along with top of the list "first call" if something new or hard to get comes in.
Well, I made the choice to go with a DDM4V5 instead of the V4 or 6940. At the price Buds is selling it for, it made the decision a lot easier. I would rather have the new stock version, but I figure the price will go back up when the new ones hit the dealers shelves. If I don't like the stock, I can sell it and swap it out with a different one.
I was goofin' off and looked up Colts Military AR's while looking for some new "super shooter" they are coing out with. Anyway,I read a nice spec piece on the 6940's big brother the Military 6940 Colt M4 ACC-M (Advanced Colt Carbine- Monolithic). I'm liken' mine a whole lot more seeing where it's blood line came from. And I'm no Dancing Poney Fan by a long shot, but it will work out just fine for it's intended use.
No way you'd feel you made a bad choice either way. I think you need to evaluate what configuration you care most about. You're not going to be throwing offset sights on the 6940 without getting just a little inefficient and you're also not going to be able to replace the rail with something else since it's monolithic, but that's awesome if you're sure on the setup (it's a good setup for many). If you aren't really specialized in your needs, frankly, just buy one. They both do their jobs.
