I won't quote the thread, but on 1911 forum there is an entire thread dedicated to it. In it, some esteemed smiths agree that they are painful for many.

This may fit the bill, but remember that thumb safeties new to be fitted precisely to each pistol to work properly. They are not a drop-in part, even if it may seem to be.
Safeties can get painful in the beginning, but your hands will build up the calluses to easily handle hundreds of rounds worth of recoil. If calluses bother you though, blending the safety helps immeasurably. Then again, once you get used to Grip Tape or 25lpi checkering on the front strap, the 1911 platform tends to become more of an extension of your arm than a tool.
