This is the email I received from Hoppes themselves when asking about #9 on chrome bore:
Prolonged contact with nickel or chrome is not recommended with any Hoppe’s solvent. Most steel are flash plated with copper because the chrome/nickel plating adhere better to copper than the bare steel. If there is even the slightest scratch, nick, void etc. in the chrome/nickel platting, hoppe’s solvents will penetrate the flaws and dissolve the underlying copper substrate and cause the chrome/nickel plating to chip and peel further.
Until they come up with a better smelling solvent, I'll stick to Hoppes. Perhaps a Hoppes #9 aftershave?
I'd like confirmation from and industry insider, but I'm willing to bet dollars to pesos there is no copper in a bore. All copper solvents would destroy cl barrels if that was the case.
Copper undercoats are generally used for decorative coatings, not industrial coatings.
