Shims do not matter one way or another if the brake times without it and has proper torque. If my brakes timed with no shims, I would run it like that all day long. Shims have no effect one way or another on can lockup. Period. Nothing on the can even comes close to contacting that part of the barrel or muzzle device. Also, timing your MD has no effect on baffle strikes. For instance, most flash hider suppressor mounts don't come with shims, some do, but, you can time brakes 180 off (AAC's brake for instance) with no effect. Shims are simply supplied with brakes/comps so you can time your device so the ports line up properly when not shooting suppressed. The index slot on Surefire cans is so when its mounted in the same position each time, it keeps a constant POI. Nothing to do with baffle strikes. Turn your rifle 90 degrees and shoot it. Now your brake ports are vertical. Shoots the same.. doesn't matter one way or another to your suppressor.
