With experience, you'll realize that the cost of replacing warn out parts in a very small fraction of the cost of shooting enough ammo to replace said parts. X vs Y stuff that seem very obvious online (chrome lined 4150 vs melonited 4140 for example) plays no real role when one is actually shooting a bullet out of the barrel on a gun. Even throwing around the idea that a gun is over-gassed is a novice idea, as that is all relative to how much gas is being put through the system. A gun that is over-gassed shooting 5.56 M193 could be perfectly gassed shooting PMC Bronze. Neither is a bad ammo, even though they serve different roles. Engaging in endless X is better than Y debates isn't going to teach you these things.
The correct answer is he should get what he likes the most, I'd get a BCM mid-length from the options given, and go out and shoot it. After thousands of rounds of ammo, with any of the rifles, he's probably going to have a replace a $5 spring or two.
I still don't understand why threads about Colt Vs XYZ are made here. Just 2 minutes spent browsing the forums will give you the majority opinion of Colt as an AR brand.
Next week, " So what about Colt vs Rock river arms". :fie:

Mr. 556capital I asked about the Smith & Wesson vs the Colt for a couple of reasons. I also did search for posts on the S&W and did not find any so I asked for what people have experienced. I have read different threads since I joined up in 2012. If this was the wrong place to ask questions sorry. Mods please move or close the thread if it is in the wrong place. At the same time everybody is new at some time and have to start somewhere. I did not ask for what I consider your sarcastic comments for what I think is a legitimate question. I am on here to learn from people who have much more experience than I do so I will continue to seek knowledge and advice from them. In other words, please do not belittle those people that are new and asking for information. Thank you to those of you have provided input to my question.
In North Idahome? Yeah theres a lot ha.
There are those who reply to these posts with responses based upon what they have read here or have been advised in many past discussions and countless threads. While some of the members here may not have first-hand experience I would say a good portion of those who actually READ and PAY ATTENTION to SME's or other squared away members will have an idea of what works and what does not. Therein they may feel they can adequately answer the question as to what the OP asked, "Smith vs Colt." There are plenty of bad rifles and an insurmountable ass load of bad information but I rarely see it go unchecked here for long periods of time. There is no replacement for training or experience, but this question needs but little of both in order to inform on which would be the better choice.Quote:
I'm seeing is that "the S&W is good, but the Colt is better," without any talk of accuracy, maintenance schedule or life span of major components to explain it.
The only good thing that can be said about S&W is their customer service. Out of the box new S&W upper during first range trip I had big chunks chip off the bolt lugs. Probably an improperly heat treated bolt, sent it back on their dime and had it back within a week with a brand new bolt. Good thing that AR was built as only a training/beater gun.
How is this even a question?
Colt/BCM/Noveske/KAC>DD/LMT>S&W>Stag/CMT/RR/Bushmaster
S&W currently makes a fine AR - they have various models where you can buy the "entry level" Sport, the Standard M&P15 that would compare feature-wise (although not spec-wise) to the typical Colt or FN Govt model, as well as variations with enhancements such as the 15T, 15TS, VTAC, etc. Disregarding the Sport for this conversation, There really isn't a direct match from S&W for the 6940 due to the monolithic rails, but generally the 15/15A lines up with the 6920, while the 15T /15X line up with the SOCOM models, etc. S&W also offer the 15TS, which has Troy components added, as well as the VTAC, which is a collaboration with Kyle Lamb and VTAC.
My first AR was a S&W 15OR (Optics Ready). It was a fine rifle, but in true tinkerer's fashion, literally nothing remains of that original purchase other than the lower (My buddy and I were just talking about it today, actually - he has a SOCOM he's thinking about selling to pickup a 7.62 piston AR, so I was getting my stake in for the SOCOM lol). Still, there's nothing wrong with S&W, but knowing more about the platform today, I would pick the Colt (although, as others have stated, either the 6920 or a SOCOM) over most any Smith today. If anything, I would suggest looking at the 15TS or the VTAC over the T. The T used to come with higher end components, but got "watered down" in the past few years due to cost cutting at S&W - hence the UTG Pro rail instead of the Troy rail they originally used, and polymer sights vs the Troy folders, 4140 barrel, etc.
The 15T is a 4150 barrel, Troy rail, still magpul sights but imo a better choice than the T. The VTAC is a nice setup IF it has the upgrades you want, ie trigger, pinned 14.5" barrel, handguards, etc - it's more of a "ready out of the box" rig for sport/range/competition style shooting though, I suppose.
Anyway, rambling on a bit - I guess what I really wanted to say was you really won't regret buying a S&W if you choose the proper model, in the $800-1000 AR market it's a solid choice, but for the same money the 6920 is the standard. The others mentioned above of course are fine companies as well, I have a couple BCM's and they are solid, but looking at Noveske, KAC, LMT, DD, etc you are getting into more money than we are talking about here. But the progression is pretty valid imo.
