Can somebody tell me why the MOE-SL need a FSB. I understand you need the caps, but why can't you use a low-pro gas block and the SLs?

*NOTE: The Mid-Length MOE SL Hand Guard is a direct replacement for most factory plastic, two-piece, mid-length hand guards and requires a ROUND front hand guard retaining cap and spring-loaded delta ring. Must be used with triangular A2 front sight assembly with round cap as other gas blocks are not compatible
You could, but I don't see why you would... By the time you've swapped in/made an LPGB, you could have also installed any free float tube you wanted. Once you've taken off a muzzle device and gas block, a barrel nut swap and new handguard install takes no time at all.
They're referring to the front sight base when they say "triangular A2 front sight assembly." Could've worded it better.
Edit - Oh, you're asking why Magpul says you need the FSB if it's just the end cap you really need? If so, tonyxcom is right... few rifles have endcaps and a low profile gas block.
It's only because you generally see those two parts together. Like you won't see a low pro gas block with either a round or triangle end cap. But as long as you have a delta ring and round front cap you can use the MOE SL hard guards. I suppose your gas block can't be any wider than an FSB but not many are. You'd also have to account for gas port alignment with your gas block when adding an end cap.
Here is one such example from TOS.

Looks like there is generous space. (images direct from Magpul website)

Thats funny cause we were critised a couple times for using round caps on a middy. Let not forget though, there is no real standard for end caps on a middy. Only Carbine (round w/ M203 Cutouts) and Rifle (triangle). Guess our use of round was due to the onsite psychic we have at the shop.
