My answer starts with "never use metal furniture". I also make sure to wear a hat and/or ear muffs, use hand warmers and keep the feet warm. I've even placed hand warmers in my hat. Remember, if the brain stays to get cold, the body will pull blood from the extremities, so when your hands get cold, insulate and warm the brain pan
when I was carrying a rifle in the cold: my hands where so numb that it didn't matter.
I went on a winter survival outing years ago, and it was one of the best/smartest things I've ever done despite the 'balls clacking' cold!
The cold does not discriminate!
I have one rifle with a MOE forend for exactly this reason, if I'm going out into serious cold and plan on staying out for a while, that's the one I take. Really the only time I use it.
I use that camo gun wrap and wrap my handguard during hunting season. Helps a lot.
This is a perfect opportunity to wrap an AR in animal hide and have a legitimate reason to do so.
