Had 3 LWRCs myself in the past. Never had any functional issues, but ditched them for a few reasons. My observations below:
1. Accuracy was fine. Reliability was fine...mostly. See #3.
2. Sandy Hook hit, and it made me realize that in a massive panic or ban scenario, LWRC proprietary parts would be impossible to find or severely overpriced due to rarity. Standard mil-spec parts would be much easier to find. Since the pistons added nothing to the gun's performance over DI, they were heavier, the gun got just as dirty with a suppressor, and Sandy Hook was a wake up call, it all added up to strike 3. Guns were gone a few months later. Now all I own are BCM/Colt/KAC, and I'm much happier.
3. My M6IC wouldn't lock back reliably with PMAGs. LWRC blamed it on the PMAGs, saying their bolt catch was built exactly to mil-spec, which it wasn't. It was noticeably shorter than all my other guns' bolt catches, and the PMAGs worked fine in those other guns. It was obviously an issue on LWRC's end, and they wouldn't take responsibility for it. Bad juju, strike 2 for me.
4. My M6A5 had a canted handguard that made contact with the gas block, ruining the free float. LWRC said it was in spec and they couldn't fix it due to the jig they use to assemble the uppers. Wilson Combat fixed it with no troubles when I sent it to them for coating. Bad juju, strike 1.
5. Some people on this forum bring up LWRC's shady past, which I think is unfair. Their past WAS shady as hell, but they led a coup, ousted the old owner/founder, and restructured. The people running it now aren't the scumbags from before. That said, their service is still questionable, their rifles bring nothing to the table, and so I won't own them anymore.
Hope your experience is better than mine. These days, if people want crazy primo guns with proprietary parts, I send them to KAC. Better guns, better service, and they've been around for a long, long time, so post-ban parts and service would continue.
Good luck.
I like LWRC's ambi lowers. I dislike their new uppers though - semi-monolithic uppers throw out the possibility of running a handguard of your choice, which means you are stuck with their proprietary modular rail system. M LOK and keymod and their respective accessories are out of the picture.
We have about 200 M6A1S versions at work since 2009. The all seem to run fine for the little amount the get shot. Out of all of them one would not zero and LWRC replaced the upper. One had a bad extractor when they used the stupid double spring design. We have been pleased with them. The main complaint from most is that they are front heavy. David
I kinda debated myself about the handguard, but I do like the look and concept of it. It comes with two decent sized rail sections and one smaller one with a qd sling swivel hole in it. I can't think of a reason why I would need more rail sections, I can run my light and vertical grip or bipod with the sections it came with, run the peq-15 on top, plus I can pick where to put the damn sling swivel. Most of those accessories I don't really use anyways except when I'm out chasing wild piggies. The only caveat is if they come loose or some other shenanigans, we'll see. But on paper it seems ideal to me.
I did see some reports that despite the aforementioned sketchy history, they do a good job on CS. Very interesting that your organization has them in inventory. I've seen rifles from Colt, FN, S&W, DPMS, and HK(416) being used professionally, all were either in Iraq or Afghanistan. And I'm around a fair amount here in CONUS and I get to see what different agencies are using. I've heard of some organizations either using LWRC or them being approved for use, but never actually seen one in the hands of a guy on the clock. Good to know.
I have one LWRC 10.5" M6A2 upper for my SBR; I have owned it since 2008, and it is the old BCG design. Runs fine, not too heavy with the 10.5" upper, although heavier than my DD 10.3". I don't run it with a suppressor, so it doesn't get too dirty. I have shot H&K 416's with 10.4" barrels, and they were very barrel heavy with Eotechs and magnifiers. Also with attached suppressors they get as dirty as DI AR's. I had one that would not eject a cartridge because the chamber was filthy.
I honestly don't think piston AR's are worth the money; a good DD, BCM, LMT, or Colt will do everything a piston AR can do, plus there is a plethora of parts available, especially with thing heating up politically.
I agree with you for the most part but I will add that out of all my rifles, my scar 17 is probably the most pleasant to shoot with the suppressor attached and it's of course a piston system. But it does get filthy, doesn't seem like there's a way around that. My colt functions well suppressed but if you get some hot ammo going through there it will blast you in the face. Sometimes I feel like I need to sit down for a few minutes after shooting it that way, it can be that foul. I'm hoping that since the piston system on the m6 has a suppressor setting on it just like the scar it will also be more polite. If it is I'll try running it full auto with the suppressor on but I don't think I want to do that with any of my DI uppers.
