I think it's all the sticks and rocks you hit that lead to mower blade wear, rather than grass. ...
on a serious note, the hard chrome should be way harder than the relatively soft gas rings. .

Also, water (or moisture) on a sharpened edge makes for a dull edge in short order. In the case of an AR bolt, the "sharpened edge' bit is the gas rings, which seem to have a shorter life than the bolt itself. I've never heard of having to replace a carrier (except in extremely rare cases where the upper receiver itself needed replacing, too).
