My guess is since you have an unshrouded bolt carrier (as in you can see the whole back half of the firing pin) the top/forward edge of the hammer is getting bound up on the firing pin.
Edit: To answer your question. No that is not normal for a regular AR15. Having an unshrouded carrier causes undue stress and wear on your firing pin. If possible (because AR10s are all a rule unto themselves) Id get a regular carrier.
Does anyone have pics of shrouded vs unshrouded for him? I wouldn't buy a new BCG unless it's a duty weapon. These 7.62 BCG's cost a damn fortune. It would bug the snot out of me though. I like to check my chamber often so it sucks to have to dump the round to get there.
Good luck with your new weapon. Welcome.

Its a piston gun, so just buying any old Carrier will be a no-go.
Op, it appears this is a Ruger design issue. However there is a thread somewhere with the exact same rifle having run thousands of rounds. I'd say don't worry and enjoy your rifle.

Leave it to Ruger to use a legacy carrier design. The face of your G2S hammer looks like it might be worn beyond what the round count on your rifle actually is although it could be lighting.

Thanks all. I'm just going to keep shooting the heck out of it. For a first AR, it has been a lot of fun.
