I mailed it on Sept 22. They apparently deposited my check immediately because it just cleared my bank. Is that normal?
Yep. Completely normal. In true .gov fashion, they are very good at taking the money. The rest takes time.
The first thing they do is take the check as deposit it before forwarding your form 4 to West Virginia.
Welcome to the land of Title II firearms. Now is a good time to start stocking up on 5.56 ammo so you can break it in properly.
I bought my first two guns back in 85. ATF was not user friendly back then. I waited eleven months for my Swedish K and eighteen months for my M1A1 Thompson Form 4s to get back to my dealer. The interesting thing was that both forms were sent together. One would think that when one was approved they would approve the second but apparently not SOP.
Now the wait time is measured in weeks instead of years. Have fun.
The NFA Branch is worlds better today than it ever was while in DC.
With that said, it is still quite a joke by any normal, business standard.
For example, I purchased a few suppressors a while back from a vendor in Oklahoma. He's an FFL/SOT, as is my guy on this end. That Form 3 took two days to process. Two days. That is reasonable, given that both parties are FFL/SOT's and there should be very little required to approve such a transfer. (The fact that such speed has probably left most of the readers of my post speechless is, in a nutshell, the whole point.)
One of the suppressors turned out to have the wrong finish, due to bad assumptions on both ends of the deal. Long story short, one can had to go back. That Form 3 is at two weeks and counting and will most likely take 2 months. For a transfer between two FFL/SOT's.
Only in government can a two day job be dragged out for two months and you not get fired.
Or maybe I'm just a bit testy because one of my recent purchases has three Form 3's and a Form 4 to go before it actually gets to me. I'm guessing I'll get around April, give or take a month. :(
Oh yeah, you can also thank Congress for the genius play of sending paperwork to Atlanta to cash a check and then forwarding it to West Virginia for actual processing. As if they don't have banks in WV or something.
I called the BATFE today. Mine isn't pending yet. Sniffle. Sniffle.:(
Meh, it has only been 30 days since I mailed the check. I am just getting antsy!
Muhahaha. Went pending Oct 23!!!:D:D
You still have a few more weeks to wait. :p
What kind of specs on your M16?
NIB Colt m16 Carbine. But I have a 10.5 inch 416 Upper Waiting to sit on top of it.
Approved DEC 2, 2008!!!
72 days from mailing!!
That is really good. Many are quoting 90 days. You beat that by more than two weeks!
SWEET!!!!
Congrats Greg! The gun looks great! Looking forward to a range report.
uh, i take it yer not gonna be posting a "break my 416" thread anytime soon?
Not unless you want to supply the ammo. You supply the ammo, I will shoot this thing until it is ragged.
:)
I picked up my M16 on thursday after having to wait a few months for uncle sam to clear it. Before you all say, "F$^&g rich bastard!," let me be clear, I sold about 75% of my gun collection to finance this. I have been collecting guns for about 17 years, and I sold a lot of neat stuff to finance this thing. In fact, other than the tax stamp, I completely financed this thing through the sale of other toys...Including an FNC (full auto), a bunch of AKs including my beloved FEGs, my Walther pistol, my "break my P2000", my Berretta shotgun, other guns, about one million orphaned holsters and magazines, a bunch of stashed ammo, my Vox AC30, my stratocaster, and a bunch of other crap. I sacrificed many years of guy toys for this! I pretty much forsaw the current Obama mania and I figured that if I was going to get anything NFA I better do it now.
Anyway! This thing is awesome. I quickly swapped the upper for a 416 upper a bought a while back for this project. Other than dropping in the spring and buffer, this is a pure plug and play affair. I shot it a little on Friday and discovered that the previous owner had not retightened the Flash suppressor. No big deal, I put a crush washer on it and remounted it for today. I zeroed my Aimpoint T-1 (which I bought for my old FEG AK). I do not have the tool to adjust the elevation on the HK sights, but they were pretty close. I loctited the diopter sights in place and am going to order the sight tool tonight.
The gun is accurate. I was able to shoot several one inch groups with Privi ammo despite the 4moa dot of the T-1, telling me that the 416 barrel is probably all it is cracked up to be.
FUN SWITCH!!!! I purposely bought an A1 because I wanted full auto, not burst (of course, you can convert them also). I have shot several machineguns before, including M16, AR-15s, Berettas, Rugers, MP-5s, UZis, Macs, etc, and I can say that the 416 is very controllable on full auto. It has been a while since I shot another M16 so I can't really say if the 416 shoots any differently.
So far I have put 400 rounds of Privi 193, 120 rounds of Lake city 193, and 60 rounds of Privi 855 through it. As expected there have been no malfunctions. I haven't given it a thorough cleaning yet but I will post something if there is anything interesting.

Dude, the awesomeness of that weapon is blinding! :p
I truly shudder to think of how much it cost!
Very nice rifle!
And congrats on achieving a dream you pursued for a very long time.
if i had known this is where my money was going when i bought the 1911 from you.....i still woulda bought it. congrats, maybe i'll get to see it in person some day.
Yep, there is a gun I forgot I sold for this one. I sold two 1911s! Sniffle, sniffle.
Greg:
Congratulations on getting the rock and roll machine. I can't believe you let Shane shoot that thing. :) He didn't even wear eye protection. That camera flash probably didn't do his night vision any good. I'll be seeing Shane next weekend at Mike Benedict's. Are you coming up with him?
I only let shane play with snap caps.
Just kidding!:D
Nope, don't know anything about a trip to Mike's.
Very, very cool
Hey Greg, Can you start a "Break My Shane" thread. He is always playing with the cool toys :D.
And by the way, that is one awesome rifle!
